About The Position

Under the direction of the Section Supervisor, this position performs various record keeping and physical duties associated with the monitoring and safeguarding of all physical evidence and found property for the Agency. The Evidence Technician maintains the integrity and chain of custody for all physical evidence and found property, ensuring items are properly entered on receipt and signs for acceptance. They enter storage location, tag items with identification numbers/barcode, scan and/or submit a copy of the receipt to the Records Section, and retain the original receipt until the final disposition of the case. This role involves storing and maintaining property in appropriate locations, and transporting evidence to and from various facilities, ensuring all storage areas are securely locked. The position also processes property dispositions, disposes of evidence where legal remedies have been exhausted, and attempts to locate rightful owners for property return or seeks other means of disposition. The Evidence Technician may appear in court to testify, facilitate and monitor the destruction of illegal drugs and firearms, and may be assigned to work at the Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Laboratory. Additionally, they may respond to crime scenes, operate computers and standard office equipment, conduct routine inventories and audits, and manage supplies for Evidence Processing.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in evidence handling and/or inventory control.
  • Must possess CCIC/NCIC Certification within the initial status period.
  • Must possess IAPE Certification (CPES) after the initial status period of one (1) year.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's license.
  • Must possess CPR and First Aid certification within the initial status period.
  • Must be able to operate a forklift.
  • Must be computer literate and type at least 25 WPM corrected.
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures and techniques of evidence gathering and storage.
  • Knowledge of courtroom and legal proceedings.
  • Knowledge of Agency and Section procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and commonly used computer software programs.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain logs, files and records.
  • Ability to operate computers and commonly used computer software programs, as well as any other standard office equipment as required by position.
  • Ability to apply sound reasoning and decision-making.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with all staff.
  • Ability to get along well with others.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the integrity and chain of custody for all physical evidence and found property and ensures the item(s) are properly entered on receipt and signs for acceptance.
  • Enters storage location, tags item(s) with identification numbers/barcode, scans and/or submits a copy of the receipt to the Records Section and retains the original receipt until the final disposition of the case.
  • Stores and maintains all property in appropriate locations.
  • Transports evidence to and from warehouses, sub-stations, forensic crime labs, external agencies and Arapahoe County facilities, ensuring all storage areas are securely locked.
  • Processes property dispositions, to include: printing, assigning/tasking, researching court dispositions and other related documentation, distribution/collection and final disposition.
  • Disposes of all evidence where final administrative/legal remedies have been exhausted.
  • Attempts to locate the rightful owner for the return of property or seeks other means of disposition.
  • May appear in court to testify as to the chain of custody of evidence.
  • Facilitates and monitors the destruction of illegal drugs and firearms.
  • May be assigned to the Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Laboratory (UMFCL) to work as an evidence technician and preform similar duties.
  • May respond to crime scenes to assist and/or transport property and evidence.
  • Operates computers and standard office equipment, including commonly used computer software programs.
  • Conducts routine inventory and audits of misc., property, firearms, drugs, etc.
  • Accountability of supplies for Evidence Processing, including inventory, ordering and stocking.
  • Maintains regular and acceptable attendance at such level as determined at the Sheriff's Office discretion.
  • Is available and willing to work such overtime per day or per week as the Sheriff's Office determines is necessary or desirable to meet its needs.
  • Is available and willing to work such weekends and holidays as the Sheriff's Office determines are necessary or desirable to meet its needs.
  • Performs duties onsite, except those job duties that are customarily or by nature performed offsite.
