The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates deaths that occur in New York City under various circumstances, including criminal violence, accidents, suicides, sudden deaths in apparent health, unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, and any suspicious or unusual manner. The OCME is guided by core values of Commitment, Accountability, Resilience, Excellence, and Service (CARES). This role operates under administrative direction with latitude for independent initiative and decision-making. The incumbent will be responsible for organizing workflow, managing assignments and work performance of Evidence and Property Control Specialists I (EPCS I), communicating information to staff, preparing performance evaluations, and training and mentoring assigned staff. The position also involves supervising EPCS Is, initiating progressive discipline, assisting Medical Examiners (MEs) in the autopsy suite by collecting, receiving, and inventorying property obtained during autopsies, operating agency vehicles for evidence and property control duties, inspecting vehicles to ensure all evidence is retrieved, and operating computer terminals for data input and retrieval. The role may also require performing duties under Assignment Level I and other assigned tasks. Selected candidates must be able to provide a DNA sample, may be required to be available 24 hours during emergencies as an essential position, and must be able to drive agency vehicles. Work authorization in the United States is required before employment can begin, and while the City of New York may provide some visa sponsorship assistance, OCME cannot guarantee it. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted, and final appointments are subject to Office of Management & Budget approval.
