About The Position

Spire Solutions, a subsidiary of The Weitz Company, is hiring an Estimator II – Steel in Des Moines, Iowa. The Estimator supports the estimating team by preparing complete portions of electrical estimates for construction projects. The work includes quantity surveying, pricing, bid solicitation, compiling cost history, and preparing system comparisons. Spire Solutions delivers interior construction solutions across the U.S., partnering with clients on design-assist, procurement, and turnkey installation services. The company takes a hands-on, collaborative approach and draws on product expertise and national supplier relationships to address supply-chain challenges.

Requirements

At least 2 years of experience as an estimator in the construction industry.
Analytical ability and a high level of accuracy.
Strong mathematical skills.
Flexibility to balance competing needs within tight timeframes.
Ability to learn quickly.
High initiative and problem-solving skills.
Detail-oriented and highly organized.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficient in basic computer software, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to learn job-related software after hire.

Nice To Haves

Experience with steel estimates is highly preferred.
A degree in a construction-related field is desired.
Experience with Procore and Bluebeam.

Responsibilities

Read and analyze technical plans and specifications, incorporating requirements into estimates with the estimating team.
Produce reliable, complete, consistent, well-documented, and timely quantity surveys for assigned items.
Generate design-development estimates with quantities and components based on incomplete plans and specifications.
Assist in developing complete project quantities from schematic-level plans and elevations.
Conduct organized subcontractor and vendor solicitation, accurately communicating the required scope of work.
Ensure complete trade coverage and advise the project lead of potential solicitation shortfalls.
Assist with bid-day spreadsheets and detailed proposal tabulation sheets (Bid Tickets), including custom client cost breakdowns or schedules of values.
Project pricing using historical data and adjust pricing for project conditions.
Review trade proposals and scope letters to identify gaps and overlaps in scope of work.
Prepare the final estimate for transfer to the job cost accounting system, adjusting it to meet the project team's cost-management needs.
Prepare cost analysis reports and identify value-analysis opportunities throughout the estimating process.
