About The Position

The School of Sport Sciences in the College of Applied Human Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Esports Outreach Coordinator and Assistant Coach. This position serves a dual role within the WVU Esports ecosystem, supporting both the academic and competitive arms of the program. This position leads the development and supervision of the academic internship infrastructure, contributes to course instruction, and designs and implements K–12 outreach and educational programming that strengthens recruitment pipelines into WVU’s esports-related academic programs. In addition, this position supports the mission of the WVU Esports student organization, assists the Director of Esports in cultivating industry partnerships that advance the regional esports ecosystem, and contributes to the coaching and competitive success of the WVU varsity esports teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Esports, Sport Management, Recreation Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in esports, coaching, youth programming, or student supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring, advising, or supervising students
  • Strong understanding of at least one competitive title (e.g., Rocket League, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Valorant)
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, supervision, and professional development of undergraduate esports student interns
  • Coordinate internship interviews, structured training, performance evaluation, and retention initiatives
  • Provide mentorship and oversight to support student growth, leadership development, and career readiness
  • Contribute to course instruction and experiential learning integration within esports-related academic programming
  • Support academic success initiatives for varsity players and student interns
  • Serve as advisor/support liaison to the WVU Esports student organization, guiding event planning and organizational development
  • Collaborate with campus partners to advance interdisciplinary academic initiatives connected to esports
  • Design, implement, and assess K–12 esports outreach initiatives aligned with recruitment goals
  • Develop and lead academic esports leagues, camps, clinics, and coach education workshops for middle and high school audiences
  • Support the establishment and growth of scholastic esports programs across the region
  • Represent WVU Esports at recruitment events, campus visits, and community engagements
  • Assist in cultivating industry and community partnerships that enhance experiential learning, sponsorship opportunities, and ecosystem growth
  • Assist the Director of Esports/Head Coach in coaching varsity esports teams across designated competitive titles
  • Support practice planning, competition preparation, performance analysis, and roster management
  • Conduct individual and team evaluations to support goal setting, development, and retention
  • Contribute to summer camp programming and competitive player development initiatives
  • Represent WVU Esports in promotional and competitive settings and collaborate with communications staff to enhance program visibility
  • Other Duties as Assigned
