About The Position

Espaces francophones (EF) is an initiative born from the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) and the Okanagan School of Education (OSE) at UBC Okanagan. Initially funded by a BC Ministry of Education and Child Care project-grant, EF aims to foster a sense of belonging to the Francophone community for bilingual and multilingual French speakers on the UBCO campus. This role is made possible with support from the Government of Canada and the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care. The Espaces Francophones Education Strategist will develop and implement organizational change strategies, initiatives, and programs that promote the overall vision, strategy, and goals for equity, diversity, and inclusion at UBC. This involves designing, delivering, and facilitating workshops, trainings, assessments, dialogues, and interventions for Francophone students, staff, and faculty to enhance the discoverability of local and distant resources and services related to health, wellbeing, and diversity. The strategist will also coordinate and facilitate connections between various organizations, institutions, and cultural venues throughout BC's Interior, contributing to UBC Okanagan's community connections.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., law, education, psychology, social work) preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and training in equity, diversity, inclusion or intercultural competencies, particularly as applied in community, health, wellness and diversity contexts.
  • Background in adult education, student development, or social justice organizations preferred.
  • Proven experience in the development, implementation and facilitation of educational programs related to community, health, wellness and diversity, preferably in a university setting.
  • Excellent oral communication skills in both French and English, with passive written comprehension in French.
  • Strong written communication skills in English.
  • Proven facilitation skills for delivering workshops, presentations, and community engagement activities.
  • Advanced analytical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and maintain collaborative partnerships with diverse groups including students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for navigating confidential and highly sensitive situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, evaluate alternatives, and make well informed decisions in the absence of clear policies or procedures.
  • Ability to execute directives, policies, and strategies effectively and independently.
  • Capacity to take direction, lead others, and contribute meaningfully within a high-performing team environment.
  • Ability to envision, implement, and assess innovation programs and initiatives.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders both on and off campus.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends and to travel occasionally off-campus for community engagement or professional activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements organizational change strategies that promote Community, Health, Wellness and Diversity of Francophones in all learning, living and working environments across campus.
  • Designs appropriate interventions tailored to the assessment of facilitation and education needs.
  • Develops, coordinates and facilitates programs and educational initiatives, forums, presentations, lectures and workshops for all levels of the University community on matters pertaining to Community, Health, Wellness and Diversity.
  • Consults with faculty, staff and students on issues related to Community, Health, Wellness and Diversity of Francophones and relevant policies and processes.
  • Facilitates meaningful collaborations and engagement with equity, diversity and inclusion-seeking service providers, units and faculties on campus and with the broader external community.
  • Participates and represents UBC in professional organizations that intersect with Community, Health, Wellness and Diversity matters.
  • Acts as an administrative resource and support to the Steering Committee of the Initiative and the grant holder.
  • Coordinates and prepares grant applications and funding proposals connected with the objectives of the initiative.
  • Liaises with individuals, community organizations, professional organizations, educational institutions, government and other partners to enhance the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Okanagan School of Education with external community.
  • Prepares reports, publications and other written work as required.
