About The Position

The Cambridge Public Schools (CPS), in partnership with our families and community, provides all students with rigorous, joyful, and culturally responsive learning as well as the social, emotional, and academic support each student needs to achieve their goals and post-secondary success as engaged community members. Over 35% of CPS students speak a language other than English at home, and over 70 languages are spoken by our families. Among the most common are Spanish, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, and Japanese. Our schools proudly embrace this diversity. The teacher will be responsible for teaching ESL to Grades 9-12 English Learners (ELs) at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with general education colleagues and the SEI team on key instructional initiatives, including planning instruction aligned with the WIDA ELD Standards, the Massachusetts State Frameworks, and the MLE Department ESL curriculum. In this role, you will set high expectations for all students and utilize the SIOP framework to plan instruction that includes robust scaffolding and differentiation to support diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a deep commitment to partnering with diverse families and creating an inclusive classroom environment that fosters mutual respect and cultural sensitivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Education from an accredited college or university required, with courses in second language acquisition and/or applied linguistics
  • Massachusetts teacher licensure in ESL 5-12 required
  • Proficiency in English

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years experience working in a linguistically diverse or urban setting preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with educational platforms, including Google Workspace for Education, Aspen, and Ellevation, or a readiness to learn them.
  • Culturally responsive and attentive the needs of diverse families and educators
  • Fluency in a language other than English (Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Haitian Creole, Bengali, Arabic, or other language) preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and deliver comprehensive units and daily lessons aligned with the WIDA ELD 2020 Standards, Massachusetts State Frameworks, and the MLE Department curriculum.
  • Utilize a variety of formative and summative assessments to accurately gauge student learning needs, track progress, and determine next instructional steps.
  • Dynamically adapt the MLE Department curriculum and instructional methods to meet the diverse linguistic, academic, and socio-emotional learning needs of students in the classroom.
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, culturally affirming, and positive learning environment that centers student voice and promotes mutual respect.
  • Actively participate in professional learning opportunities, including instructional coaching and district professional development (PD).
  • Continuously reflect on current teaching practices to incorporate evolving best practices for multilingual learners into daily lessons.
  • Partner effectively with diverse families, general education colleagues, and the SEI team.
