About The Position

CATS Academy Boston is seeking an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor to teach various ESL levels to international students within a high school setting. The full-time teacher is responsible for a full course load (five classes, up to three preparations), serving as an advisor, and fulfilling extracurricular responsibilities. Key duties include planning and delivering engaging lessons that cater to diverse learning styles, registering student attendance, supervising student behavior, writing progress reports, and providing timely feedback on assessments using school-designated software (Canvas). Additional expectations involve safeguarding student welfare, adhering to school policies, attending meetings and professional development sessions, supporting school events, satisfying study hall and weekend duties, and participating in the annual performance evaluation process. The role also requires maintaining high standards of ethics and behavior, treating students with respect, modeling desired behaviors, and ensuring student safety and well-being. Employees are expected to demonstrate accountability, enthusiasm, creativity, teamwork, and a customer-focused approach.

Requirements

  • MA/BA in English with ESL certification to teach mainly but not limited to Academic Writing and Research
  • All candidates should have previous experience working with international students.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.

Nice To Haves

  • MA TESOL to teach any ESL level (preferred)
  • Experience teaching ESL in a high school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Register student attendance on a daily, class by class basis in a timely manner and supervise student behavior in accordance with the Student Handbook.
  • Write reports on student academic and personal progress with clear formative comments and targets as to how to improve work by the deadlines given and provide assignments, grades and feedback on assessments on a timely basis using school designated software (Canvas).
  • Design and administer a range of lesson materials and assessments that reflect an awareness of different learning styles and language skills.
  • Safeguard the welfare of all students for whom the school is responsible.
  • Adhere to standards and procedures detailed in the Faculty/Staff Handbook.
  • Attend academic, departmental, and school meetings when required and attend/deliver professional development sessions as directed.
  • Attend school events (concerts, plays, sports contests, etc.) whenever possible that promote school spirit and support advisees.
  • Satisfy study hall duties
  • Weekend duties as determined by the head of school, as needed.
  • Satisfy extracurricular responsibilities as defined by the administration.
  • Log requests for absences from work (sick days, personal days, special leaves, etc.) in school designated software (ADP).
  • Participate in an annual performance evaluation process.
  • Promote a positive work experience for all Academy employees.
  • Assist in providing a professional and welcoming environment for all visitors to the Academy.
  • Comply with any reasonable request from the Head to undertake other work not listed above.
  • Treat students with dignity and build relationships with them rooted in mutual respect.
  • Model the behaviors you expect of students in your own behavior.
  • Remember that safeguarding student safety and well-being is of primary importance.
  • Maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality.
  • Understand and act according to relevant Academy policies and/or national or local statutory frameworks.
