About The Position

This role is for an ESL Instructor (Bilingual Role) responsible for planning and delivering high-quality instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and workforce readiness. The instructor will teach English Language Acquisition, English Literacy/Civics Education (IELCE), workforce preparation skills, and career readiness competencies. A key aspect of this role is creating a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment. The position also involves student support, retention, assessment, data management, collaboration with staff, and program support. The schedule is Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, from August 25 to December 17, 2026, at Highland Park High School. The hourly rate is $45.11, with additional paid preparation time and professional development hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience teaching adult English language learners and/or adult basic education students.
  • Training or coursework in second language acquisition and instructional methodology.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency required (for designated bilingual positions).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology and digital literacy.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with adult learners from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and workforce readiness aligned with the Illinois Adult Education Content Standards and District 113 Adult Education curriculum.
  • Prepare course syllabi, lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that meet program requirements.
  • Incorporate evidence-based instructional practices and differentiated teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of adult learners.
  • Integrate technology, digital literacy, and appropriate AI-supported instructional tools into classroom instruction to enhance student learning.
  • Teach English Language Acquisition, English Literacy/Civics Education (IELCE), workforce preparation skills, and career readiness competencies, as appropriate.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that promotes student engagement and persistence.
  • Monitor student progress and provide instructional support to help students achieve educational and career goals.
  • Encourage regular attendance and actively support student retention through communication and follow-up.
  • Assist students with educational planning, referrals, and guidance as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with program staff to identify and address barriers to student success.
  • Support student assessment, including pre-testing, post-testing, goal setting, and measurable skill gain activities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records, including attendance, assessments, educational functioning levels, NRS outcomes, student goals, and achievement data.
  • Record attendance in TopsPro and the Adult Ed class roster (if requested) according to program timelines and state requirements.
  • Complete and submit all required reports, surveys, documentation, and work samples by established deadlines.
  • Collaborate with instructors and program staff to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction across the Adult Education program.
  • Participate in curriculum development, instructional planning, team teaching, and shared instructional initiatives as appropriate.
  • Prepare substitute lesson plans and instructional materials when absences are anticipated.
  • Attend required staff meetings, professional development activities, and program events.
  • Complete all required professional development hours in accordance with ICCB and District requirements.
  • Assist with student recruitment, orientation, outreach, and public relations efforts.
  • Support program initiatives designed to increase enrollment, student persistence, transition, and measurable outcomes.
  • Contribute to continuous program improvement by participating in planning, evaluation, and implementation of new instructional initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student records and personally identifiable information in accordance with FERPA and Adult Education policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, punctuality, ethical conduct, and effective communication.
  • Report to work regularly and provide timely notice of absences.
  • Adhere to all Board of Education policies, District procedures, and Adult Education program expectations.
  • Exercise reasonable care to ensure the safety of students, facilities, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Adult Education Program Director.
