About The Position

GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated ERS Systems Integration Lead to join our innovative engineering team in Concord, NC. This vital role focuses on leading the architecture and integration of all Energy Recovery System (ERS) subsystems into the F1 power unit and chassis, ensuring worldclass performance, reliability, and safety in the pinnacle of motorsport. You will apply both your technical and leadership skills to system design, modeling, and creative problem solving while providing day today technical leadership to the ERS systems and integration team. You will work across battery, e-motor, power electronics, thermal management, and control systems to define system level requirements, interfaces, and operating concepts for a bespoke hybrid power unit developed specifically for Formula 1 competition.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in high performance hybrid or electric powertrain development, ideally from F1, Formula E, WEC/IMSA hybrids, or advanced performance EV/HEV programs.
  • Demonstrated background in systems engineering or systems integration for complex electromechanical systems (architecture, requirements, interfaces, validation).
  • Strong technical understanding of:
  • E-motors
  • Power electronics and inverters
  • HV batteries and BMS
  • Hybrid control strategies, torque/speed control, and energy management.
  • Proven experience acting as a technical lead or integration lead, balancing hands-on engineering contributions with coordinating and guiding a small team.
  • Track record of delivering complex systems under aggressive performance and timing targets in a fast paced, high pressure environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands on experience with hybrid or EV system modeling and simulation (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Modelica/Dymola, GTSuite or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with systems engineering methods and tools (SysML/UML, requirements management, FMEA/FMECA/DFMEA, Vmodel or similar development processes).
  • Experience with dyno, HIL, or system level rigs for hybrid powertrain or ERS verification and validation.
  • Knowledge of FIA F1 power unit and ERS regulations or similar top tier motorsport technical frameworks.
  • Experience collaborating with chassis/vehicle teams on packaging, cooling, safety, and serviceability for HV systems.
  • Prior involvement in establishing or improving systems integration processes, standards, or toolchains.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition and evolution of the ERS system architecture, including ES (Energy Store, battery), MGU-K (e-motor), CU-K (inverter), DCDC, HV/LV distribution, thermal systems, and control interfaces.
  • Own system level requirements and interface specifications between ERS, ICE, chassis, and vehicle control systems, ensuring clear, testable, and traceable definitions.
  • Drive cross functional integration reviews with mechanical, electrical, thermal, controls, and software teams to ensure robust interfaces, packaging solutions, and serviceability.
  • Perform and guide concept and tradeoff studies (component sizing, topology, cooling concepts, energy management strategies) using modeling, simulation, and test data.
  • Define and support system level verification and validation plans (dyno, HIL, rigs) to prove ERS integration performance, safety, and durability.
  • Lead structured root cause investigations for ERS integration issues (electrical, mechanical, thermal, software) and drive effective corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Ensure ERS integration complies with FIA technical regulations and internal HV safety standards across all operating phases.
  • Provide day to day technical leadership for ERS systems and integration activities, balancing your own hands on contributions with guiding other engineers’ work.
  • Plan and prioritize ERS integration work (design reviews, tests, investigations) in collaboration with project management and other technical leads.
  • Mentor and develop junior and midlevel engineers, providing structured feedback, coaching, and technical guidance.
  • Represent ERS integration in cross functional forums, clearly communicating risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs to stakeholders across power unit, chassis, and race operations.
