About The Position

The VA San Diego Healthcare System is seeking an Emergency Room Physician to provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients who present for care in the ED. This role involves providing professional advice to other VA providers and covering the full range of emergency room care typically found in an urban civilian practice. The position is estimated to be 95% direct patient care and 5% administrative responsibility.

Requirements

  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in any other U.S. State or Territory.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine.
  • No less than 2 years full-time ER experience in a high-volume ED.
  • Must be an MD or DO.
  • Must have a current DEA.
  • Must have and maintain current certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS by way of an American Heart training program (AHA or Red Cross).

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients who present for care in the ED.
  • Provide professional advice to other VA providers concerning professional management of patients in their fast-track portion of the Emergency Department.
  • Cover the range of emergency room care typically provided in an urban civilian practice of similar size.
  • Treat patients of all ages.
  • Manage major trauma, including fractures of multiple extremities, stab wounds, open wounds of the chest and abdomen, head trauma, suspected spine injuries, lacerations, and amputations.
  • Manage major medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, and shock.
  • Manage obstetrical emergencies such as deliveries of single or multiple births, acute pregnancy complications, and vaginal bleeding.
  • Manage pediatric emergencies, including neonatal resuscitation.
  • Manage acute psychiatric problems, including suicide attempts.
  • Treat lower-acuity complaints, including viral illnesses, other infections, minor orthopedic problems, minor trauma, and alcohol abuse.
  • Manage other miscellaneous medical problems, both acute and chronic.
