About The Position

Operates vehicles and other equipment for the Public Works Department in performing construction, and/or right-of-way and street maintenance. This role involves operating various city vehicles and equipment to perform a variety of tasks including street maintenance, vegetation management, drain installation/repairs, asphalt work, pothole patching, grading, concrete repairs, special event setup/cleanup, shouldering, erosion control, street sweeping, debris pickup, ditch and culvert cleaning, snow plowing, and traffic control setup. The position also requires adherence to safety rules, hazard awareness, and daily logging of duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must possess or obtain a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Depending on assigned area; obtain certifications such a Flagger and/or Bucket Truck depending on assignment; complete required OSHA and ADOSH training.
  • May be required to obtain an Arizona Department of Agriculture PMD Applicator Certificate.
  • Knowledge of operation of assigned vehicles such as side-load, front-load, and roll-off refuse collection vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of workers, vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of operation of backhoe, articulated loaders, and stationary boom crane.
  • Skill in safely operating miscellaneous construction equipment.
  • Skill in utilizing customer service techniques when responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • Skill in using a variety of computer and tablet software including maintenance management software, time entry software, and Windows computer applications such as Outlook.
  • Skill in operating backhoe, loader, motor grader, paving equipment, mowers, large brush chipper, and small tools, (jack hammer, target saw, chainsaw, weed eater, and blower).
  • Skill in operating and working around moving vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to direct moving vehicles and pedestrians with authority in a polite and professional manner.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Some prior heavy or motorized equipment operator experience such as collection vehicles, backhoe, loader, 10-wheel dump truck, snow plow, and other construction related equipment.
  • Bilingual skills beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a motor vehicles and other equipment for the City to perform a variety of construction, public roads maintenance, street sweeping, vegetation management duties, and drain installation/repairs
  • Operates City vehicles and equipment such as, a backhoe, an articulated loader, and a stationary boom crane.
  • Performs basic repairs for vehicles and equipment used during the course of business.
  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspection checks for assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Perform basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment including greasing key components, washing and cleaning interior and exterior of vehicles, and cleaning air filter and radiator.
  • Maintains, removes, and lays asphalt; patches potholes; and grades roads and alleys.
  • Performs miscellaneous concrete repairs and installation.
  • Assists in the setup, preparation, and cleanup of special events.
  • Performs shouldering and erosion control.
  • Sweeps streets; picks up debris/trash.
  • Digs/grades/cleans ditches and culverts; cleans catch basins.
  • Performs street maintenance and rights-of-ways work with crews or individually; mows rights-of ways.
  • Plows snow from roads and parking lots; spreads cinders on roads.
  • Sets up traffic controls for both daily tasks and special events.
  • Adheres to safety rules; watches out for hazards while performing job, such as power lines, other vehicles, dogs, fire hydrants, and people.
  • Logs duties performed at end of day depending on job assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
