About The Position

This is the entry level to mid-level classification in the Street Maintenance Equipment Operator position. Incumbents perform less skilled and more routine street maintenance, construction, and repair work. Employees at this level work under close supervision as they gain experience and demonstrate the ability to perform a range of duties including proficiency in snow plowing with winged plow trucks with minimal supervision. This class is distinguished from the Level 2 Operator in that the latter performs work which requires a higher level of experience, with consistent proficiency and can cross-function with ease on all equipment (Backhoe, Grader, Loader, Sweeper, Street Snow Blower) without direct supervision.

Requirements

  • Must possess valid CDL.
  • High school graduate or equivalent and experience in landscaping, related construction, or maintenance work.
  • Will be required to pass a skills test for proper placement in role.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid within first (3) three months of employment required.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficient in snow plowing, other equivalent equipment, cement work.

Responsibilities

  • Patching streets, forming, and pouring concrete, making asphalt repairs in streets; rebuilding and repairing catch basins.
  • Breaks and removes pavements; digs, shovels, hauls, and loads soils, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials, tools, and equipment; cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
  • Follows all safety protocols and maintains records of work performed.
  • Meets with and responds to inquiries and concerns from the public.
  • Drives vehicles to work sites and sets up and removes barricades to protect crews from street traffic including lane closures.
  • Directs traffic in roadways to protect crews.
  • Skilled in techniques, methods, tools, and material used in applying paint and other protective coatings to a wide variety of surfaces, including wood, concrete, asphalt, stucco, and metals.
  • Salting and plowing snow in winter conditions and working on annual leaf collection program and hauling, loading, and dumping of refuse.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance, i.e., checks oil, tire pressure, battery, etc.
  • Manual labor incidental to operation that is physical in nature and requires ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Operation of various types of trucks and machines and equipment incidental to public works construction and maintenance activities.
  • Operates air compressor and pneumatic air tools, including breaking guns and concrete saws; uses hand tools including shovels, picks, brooms, wheelbarrows, rakes and rollers, and a variety of small hand tools for a verity of trades.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
