About The Position

Operates a variety of contractor's equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of parks, facilities, street rights-of-way, and other public areas. Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in street and utility maintenance work.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for use and care of mowing, trimming, wood chipper and chainsaw equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for use and care of backhoes.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in following oral and written communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Skill in planning and organizing materials and supplies necessary to complete work orders or daily assignments.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment and tools.
  • Ability to learn to operate associated software systems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to utilize computer hardware and software relating to work and field equipment.
  • Understand City purchasing policy (Equipment Operator II and above).
  • Ability to provide supervisory duties (Equipment Operator II and above).
  • Maintain and control appropriate tool and material inventories (Equipment Operator II and above).
  • Knowledge of general maintenance and repair techniques for water, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems depending on area of assignment (Equipment Operator II and above).
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) is preferred for all equipment operator levels above I.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains city rights-of-way and other public areas.
  • Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as tractors, mowers, boom-axe, backhoe, street sweeper, lift truck, cranes, chainsaws, etc.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Assists in the installing and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Follows safety procedures to prevent damage to public and private property and persons.
  • Establishes traffic control as necessary in accordance with the TMUTCD.
  • Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
  • Assists with other parks and maintenance items and necessary.
  • Provides backup assistance, on-call coverage and support to other City departments as assigned.
  • Travels to attend meetings and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
