About The Position

The Horticulturalist is responsible for the planning, cultivation, installation, and maintenance of municipal landscapes, ornamental gardens, greenhouse operations, and floral displays throughout the City’s parks and public spaces. This position plays a key role in enhancing the beauty, sustainability, and environmental quality of public landscapes, including right-of-way corridors, high-profile garden areas, and seasonal floral installations. A primary focus of this role is greenhouse production and propagation of annuals and perennials used in City landscapes and beautification projects. The Horticulturalist develops planting designs, oversees plant health and production schedules, and performs skilled horticultural maintenance practices to ensure vibrant and attractive public spaces year-round.

Requirements

  • One year (1) of general labor experience.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Professional horticulture or greenhouse experience.
  • Experience with greenhouse production of annuals and perennials.
  • State pesticide applicator certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Certified nursery grower or ability to obtain within a specified 6 months of employment.
  • Passion for public horticulture and community beautification.
  • Creativity in floral and landscape design.
  • Commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining high-quality public spaces.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position, subject to random drug screens.

Responsibilities

  • Manage greenhouse production of annuals, perennials, and ornamental plants.
  • Oversee propagation, plant care, environmental controls, and inventory.
  • Maintain greenhouse facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain landscaped medians, rights-of-way, gardens, and public spaces.
  • Perform planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and weed control.
  • Monitor and address plant health, pest, and disease concerns.
  • Design and coordinate seasonal displays and landscape enhancements.
  • Select plant materials and assist with beautification projects.
  • Operate landscape equipment, vehicles, and irrigation systems.
  • Coordinate with staff, contractors, volunteers, and community groups.
  • Maintain required records and assist with snow removal, emergency response, and other assigned duties.
