About The Position

This is a winter seasonal, full-time, safety-sensitive position within SCC's Operations Department reporting to the Roadway Supervisor. A minimum Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required. The EOL employee performs a variety of roadway and highway maintenance duties under established guidelines and supervision. Responsibilities include operating maintenance equipment, performing manual labor, and supporting safe roadway operations during winter weather conditions. Employees must exercise sound judgment and caution while operating equipment to prevent injury, equipment damage, and hazards to the motoring public. The position requires regular outdoor work in all weather conditions, including snow and ice events, and frequent exposure to traffic, noise, vibrations, dust, dirt, fumes, and exhaust. Duties involve continuous standing, bending, equipment operation, and moderate manual dexterity. Employees must be able to perform heavy physical tasks, including lifting, shoveling, and moving materials, with frequent exertion and strain.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to use various hand tools and materials used in highway maintenance.
  • Ability to operate a variety of highway maintenance equipment ranging from small power tools to large vehicular equipment requiring moderate training.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws applicable to light and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air-brake endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Patches, chips, seals, and blacktops roads.
  • Trims around hedges and signs and cuts down and removes dead trees.
  • Mows grass along road shoulders and rights-of-way.
  • Loads and dumps crushed stone, sand, and salt from trucks.
  • Operates various types of equipment requiring moderate training; examples include, but are not limited to: trucks that may be equipped with abrasive spreaders, oil distributors, or bucket rigs; tractors that may be equipped with mowers, scrapers, spreaders, sweepers, or loaders; bush hogs, trenchers, post drivers, jackhammers, portable pavement marking machines and tar kettles, street sweepers, and front-end loaders.
  • Cleans storm drains, sewers, bridge decks, piers, and culverts.
  • Aids in cleaning highways after accidents and removes trash from roadsides.
  • Assists in performing various winter maintenance activities, such as operating and maintaining snow and ice removal equipment, sign, guardrail, and fence repair, and other related functions as assigned.
  • Ensures proper care and cleaning of equipment as instructed by the supervisor.
  • Obeys all safety policies and procedural guidelines.
  • Performs patrolling duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
