About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Highways and Aviation Denali District is seeking an Equipment Operator Journey 1 / 2 to help keep State highways and airports safe and operational year-round. This position is part of a dedicated maintenance crew and involves operating and maintaining heavy and light equipment, maintaining roads, vegetation, signs, bridges, culverts, drainage structures, bike paths, and other State right-of-way assets. The role also includes performing traffic control and flagging. This position performs work across a variety of maintenance activities and may require shift work.

Requirements

Any combination of education and/or progressively responsible experience providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential duties of independently operating small or non-specialized (light duty) motorized equipment to perform specific assignments as an assistant under direction, using standard methods and techniques of the operational field (for Journey 1)
Any combination of education and/or progressively responsible experience providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential duties of independently operating specialized, heavy-duty equipment using standard methods and techniques of the operational field (for Journey 2)
Knowledge of equipment functions
Knowledge of equipment use appropriate to specific conditions and assignment
Knowledge of appropriate use of construction, maintenance, agricultural or other chemicals and materials
Knowledge of hazardous materials regulations
Knowledge of safety regulations and practices related to equipment use and operation
Skill in operation of specific equipment
Ability to set up the operation of equipment proficiently and safely operate equipment
Ability to maintain and communicate situation awareness
Ability to take appropriate action to prevent damage
Ability to perform equipment safety checks and identify inspection points
Ability to observe the job environment and conditions
Ability to read and understand regulations related to the work
Ability to follow instructions
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as a team member
Ability to react effectively in emergency and disaster situations
A Class B Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire (for Journey 1)
A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position (for Journey 2)
Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383)
Register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties
Provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382
Obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at applicant's expense
Transcripts are required to verify educational credentials used to meet or support the minimum qualifications/competencies
