About The Position

The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Equipment Operator III for the Solid Waste Division. This position is located at the Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange, Florida and will be responsible for operating heavy equipment for daily operations. This position requires a high degree of proficiency and dexterity in operating landfill heavy equipment. The candidate must be able to operate a bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck, and waste separation equipment. NOTE: This position’s schedule will be four (4) 10 hours days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. This position will be exposed to outdoor elements, fumes, dust, uneven ground, low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity. Overtime may be required, and schedules may change based on operational needs.

Requirements

Completion of the eight (8) grade
three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.

Nice To Haves

Possess a Florida CDL Class A
at least one (1) year of experience in the operation of landfill equipment to include a bulldozer, excavator, front end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck and waste separation equipment
be familiar with Solid Waste operational practices or principles.

Responsibilities

Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary landfill.
Directs truck drivers to dumping locations.
Operates a bulldozer in fill area.
Operates off road dump truck.
Transports equipment to and from construction site.
Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
Operates excavator.
Operates front end loader.
Loads dirt, mulch, and other construction materials.
Operates landfill compactor.
Operates a semi-trailer with walking floor on regional roadways and in a landfill working environment.
Operates a large front-end loader in an enclosed waste transfer facility with truck traffic using tipping floor attachments.
Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
Performs routine service and maintenance.
May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
Responds to emergency situations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
