About The Position

Performs work involving operating complex landfill equipment. With direction from the Landfill Site Manager, build and maintain roadways, perform trash placement, apply daily cover, perform site maintenance, and assist with all Campus diversion and special projects. Provides “frontline customer service” by providing general information regarding Mesa County Solid Waste Management services, products, programs, and activities to the general public, vendors, and other County departments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) year of related experience.
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job.

Responsibilities

  • Operates complex landfill equipment such as front-end loader, water truck, landfill compactor, scraper, motor grader, dozer, and backhoe in order to perform maintenance activities.
  • Performs routine landfilling operations, which can include, but are not limited to, soil excavation, maintaining access roads, waste compaction, stormwater BMP installation, dust suppression, fueling equipment, hauling trash, monitoring incoming materials to ensure they are acceptable, placing final cover, material grinding, and fire mitigation.
  • Maintain all waste diversion areas, including, but not limited to, the friable asbestos cell, white goods, waste tire drop-off, public drop-off area, mattress recycling program, and traditional recycling yard.
  • Maintains access roads leading to and from the tipping floor, including grading, snow removal, and dust control.
  • Ensures stormwater is managed in accordance with the permit by maintaining proper grading for stormwater drainage, clearing debris from existing stormwater control ditches and water retention ponds, and installing temporary stormwater BMPs where needed.
  • Assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining landfill gas collection system piping and wells.
  • Provide litter control, including collection of blown litter.
  • Responsible for overall site cleanliness and upkeep.
  • Maintain all site signage.
  • Ensures materials coming into the facility are approved and in compliance with the Division’s Engineering Design and Operation Plan.
  • Will perform load inspections as needed.
  • Direct the public to appropriate dumping areas depending on the contents of their refuse.
  • Direct traffic on landfill tipping deck to ensure safe unloading of refuse.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on the facility’s heavy equipment, specialized equipment, and machinery.
  • Routine maintenance includes but may not be limited to checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire pressure, checking belts, greasing loaders, and changing and blowing off equipment filters.
  • Executes necessary precautions to ensure safety and compliance with OSHA.
  • Identify and report safety concerns to the Landfill Site Manager.
  • Utilizes skills related to good customer service and answers customer questions related to the policies and regulations of the Solid Waste Management Division, including the landfill and satellite facilities.
  • Responds to citizens' unique needs and complaints.
  • Responds in emergency situations, including after-hours when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
