About The Position

Pima County Department of Transportation is looking for an Equipment Operator II. This position will lead and participate in operating vehicles and equipment to meet the finish construction specification requirements for road maintenance. Responsibilities include operating graders to finish grades and establish base courses for roadways, as well as finishing grades for roads and drainageways. The role involves blade-mixing and laying bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete, loading and securing equipment for transport, and performing minor repairs and maintenance on equipment. Additionally, the Equipment Operator II will participate in various manual labor tasks and may perform duties like those of an Equipment Operator I as needed. Requirements

  • Four years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles, which may include street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributers, front end loaders, graders/scrapers, bulldozers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, tractor/semi-trailer combinations and like equipment.
  • Completion of a vocational/technical program from an accredited college or technical school in heavy equipment operations may be substituted for six months of the required experience.
  • One years of experience as an Equipment Operator I with Pima County.
  • Valid driver's license is required at the time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver's license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine the applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • This position requires a valid Arizona Class D driver’s license at the time of application or prior to completion of initial/promotional probation.
  • A valid Arizona commercial driver's license (CDL), Class A, Class B, or Class C with appropriate endorsements is required.
  • For these positions, failure to maintain the required CDL may be grounds for termination.
  • Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing.
  • Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure shall be grounds for termination.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.
  • This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen.
  • This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening.
  • Constantly operates and inspects mechanical equipment.
  • Constantly positions self to use, inspect, clean or repair tools and machinery.

  • Frequently moves tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across the manufacturing floor.
  • Frequently operates a motor vehicle safely and legally, in accordance with applicable state and federal transportation laws.
  • Occasionally moves tools and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds across the manufacturing floor.
  • Occasionally ascends/descends machinery and equipment to repair/service.
  • Action Activity - none; Motion Activity - simple and firm grasping; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, on a radio, behind themselves and equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - in person; Vision - operate a motor vehicle, operate commercial vehicle, operate machinery, operate a forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish color, have depth perception and have peripheral vision.
  • Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Transportation Equipment Operator Class A certification/qualification required.
  • Experience in a lead and training position, providing direction and training to personnel in the safe and effective operation of equipment.
  • Experience operating various types of heavy equipment used in roadway maintenance and repair, including road grading, shoulder repair, equipment loading and unloading, and proper tie-down and rigging procedures for the safe transport of equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of equipment to meet finish construction specifications in public works construction and maintenance such as roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems
  • Leads and trains laborers, equipment operators, and other personnel in equipment operations and in the successful completion of work
  • Operates backhoe to excavate around high-pressure gas lines, electrical conduits, and water mains to access sewer lines
  • Operates grader to finish grades and base courses of roadways, checking and setting grade stakes for grading and leveling
  • Finish-grades roadways and drainage ways
  • Blade-mixes and lays bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete
  • Loads, secures, and transports equipment on transport trailers
  • Performs minor equipment repairs and servicing
  • Participates in a variety of manual labor tasks
  • May perform any of the duties required of the Equipment Operator I
