About The Position

The role of an Equipment Operator I is a semiskilled work position including the operation of various heavy equipment including dump truck, flatbed truck, bucket truck, Skid Steers, front-end loader, chipper truck, and tractors used for City street maintenance operations. Position generally functions as part of a crew but may function independently depending upon area of assignment. Normally scheduled work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but may be subject to change based on projects or services. Employee is subject to emergency on call rotation. Overtime may be required. This is a mission critical position: Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The City Manager makes the determination on who will be required to work in times of emergency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required.
  • Two years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy trucks, tractors or similar equipment, required.
  • Driving and the operation of large trucks and construction equipment is a requirement.
  • Florida Class B CDL License required at time of hire.

  • Ability to perform manual labor related to the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Drives trucks transporting crews, materials, and supplies.
  • Loads and unloads heavy equipment and materials.
  • Operates heavy equipment performing road/street maintenance activities.
  • Operates large tractor or other mowing equipment to maintain right-of-way and drainage areas.
  • Assists in the hanging of overhead banners across highway.
  • Places barricades and detour signs as needed for special events and road closures.
  • Performs tree work from an articulating bucket truck.
  • Performs basic equipment maintenance.
  • At times of an emergency, performs field repair work of equipment (such as repair/replace hydraulic lines and basic field refueling operations).
  • Continuous attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
  • Any additional duties as assigned by the Public Works Superintendent and/or the Public Works Director.
