About The Position

El Paso County is seeking dedicated individuals to join their Department of Public Works, Highway Division, as Equipment Operators. This role involves hands-on work in maintaining, repairing, and building infrastructure to ensure safe travel and strong infrastructure across the Pikes Peak Region. The position offers a career path with opportunities for advancement from Level I to III based on demonstrated skills, dedication, and leadership. Positions are available in various crews including Traffic, Asphalt, Urban Drainage, Rural Drainage, General Maintenance, and Truck String. The role requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • One year of full-time experience in maintenance, repair, construction, or related experience (Equipment Operator II).
  • One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment (Equipment Operator II).
  • Three years of experience in maintenance, repair, construction, or related experience (Equipment Operator III).
  • Three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment (Equipment Operator III).
  • Basic knowledge of highway, construction, maintenance, and repair techniques and procedures preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain heavy equipment based upon area of assignment.
  • Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with instruction and in a team environment.
  • Must communicate and work effectively with County staff and the public.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to read and interpret the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to complete Individualized Development Plan (IDP) based on area of assignment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Working knowledge of highway, construction, maintenance, and repair techniques and procedures (Equipment Operator II).
  • Knowledge of highway, construction, maintenance, and repair techniques and procedures (Equipment Operator III).
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, independently, and in a team environment (Equipment Operator III).
  • Ability to mentor and train employees (Equipment Operator III).
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle check, drug screen, and physical examination.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit with Tanker (N) Endorsement and no air brake (L) restriction must be obtained prior to employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker (N) endorsement and no air brake (L) restriction within ninety days of employment; CDL training is provided by El Paso County.
  • Must obtain a Colorado Flagger Certificate within sixty days of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain necessary certifications and licenses as applicable to position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) Endorsement and no air brake (L) restriction (Equipment Operator II).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) Endorsement and no air brake (L) restriction (Equipment Operator III).

Responsibilities

  • Operate construction and maintenance vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Perform snow removal and respond to on-call emergencies such as floods or storm clean-up.
  • Set up safe, compliant construction work zones to protect the traveling public.
  • Load, unload, and maintain equipment and materials.
  • Accurately record tasks performed and materials used.
  • Perform maintenance, repair, and construction duties under direct supervision for various crews (asphalt, general maintenance, truck string, drainage, reclamation/stabilization, blades, signals, traffic, and signs).
  • Perform manual labor using various tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Prepare, maintain, and clean equipment and job sites for various projects.
  • Provide work zone traffic control, including flagging duties.
  • Respond to on-call after-hours emergencies, such as snow removal, flood repair, tornado clean-up, or other natural disaster or safety needs for the motoring public.
  • Train staff in various duties as assigned (Equipment Operator III).
  • Act as Team Lead in the absence of a supervisor (Equipment Operator III).
