About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Streets/Storm Drain/Solid Waste/Landfill Superintendent, operates heavy equipment for the construction, maintenance and emergency operation of the roads within Payson City limits. This position has multiple levels (I, II, or III) with increasing responsibilities and requirements.

Requirements

  • Must be able to respond to emergency on-call situation within 30 minutes.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • A valid Utah Driver's license must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years' experience as an equipment operator performing the same or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (for Operator I).
  • Possess and maintains throughout employment a Class A, Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire date (for Operator I).
  • ATSSA Flagger Certification (all levels).
  • First Aid/CPR Training (all levels).
  • Confined Space Training (all levels).
  • Trench Shoring Training (all levels).
  • Snow Plow Training (Required within 12 months of hire date) (for Operator I).
  • Must acquire heavy equipment operator certification, on at least one (1) of the following types of heavy equipment: skid steer, backhoe or loader by an accredited training organization (i.e. Utah LTAP within six month of hire date, remains on probation until acquired) (for Operator I).
  • All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus three (3) years' experience as an equipment operator performing the same or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. One year as Operator I or equivalent experience (for Operator II).
  • Possess and maintains throughout employment a Class A, Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker and hazardous material endorsements (for Operator II).
  • Must acquire heavy equipment operator certification, on at least two (2) of the following types of heavy equipment: backhoe, loader, skid steer, grader, dozer and/or excavator (for Operator II).
  • Possess at least two (2) of the following certifications: Pesticide Applicator License, Trenching and Shoring, Confined Space Entry certification, American Concrete Institute certification or Utah LTAP Asphalt Maintenance certification (for Operator II).
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus four (4) years' experience as an equipment operator performing the same or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three years as Operator II or equivalent experience (for Operator III).
  • Possess and maintains throughout employment a Class A, Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker and hazardous material endorsements (for Operator III).
  • Must acquire heavy equipment operator certification, on at least three (3) of the following types of heavy equipment: backhoe, loader, skid steer, grader, dozer and/or excavator (for Operator III).
  • Possess at least three (3) of the following certifications: Pesticide Applicator License, Trenching and Shoring, Confined Space Entry certification, American Concrete Institute certification or Utah LTAP Asphalt Maintenance certification (for Operator III).
  • All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position or demotion to Equipment Operator I or II.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment for the construction, maintenance and emergency operation of roads.
  • Serves on-call as needed.
  • Responds to emergency on-call situations within 30 minutes.
