Equipment Mechanic – City of West Allis Department of Public Works. As an Equipment Mechanic, you’ll maintain and repair the vehicles and heavy equipment that power critical city services—from snow removal to public safety support. Requirements

  • A valid driver’s license that meets City driving requirements.
  • Associate’s degree with 0–2 years of experience OR 4–5 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL (B, C, D with Tanker endorsement) and forklift certification within 12 months.
  • Ability to work in tight spaces, all weather conditions, and on diverse types of equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Certification
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing engines, drivetrains, electrical systems, hydraulics, HVAC, suspension, and emissions systems
  • Welding, fabrication, and/or body repair experience (metal, fiberglass, or plastic)
  • Ability to assess damage and determine effective repair solutions
  • Experience operating or transporting heavy equipment
  • Skills in decal installation, safety striping, light painting, or refinishing

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) inspections and complete necessary repairs.
  • Handle fleet-wide tire repair, replacement, and maintenance.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and technical issues on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain and service a broad range of equipment, including cars, trucks, refuse vehicles, loaders, sweepers, pumps, compressors, and other heavy equipment.
  • Complete occasional welding, fabrication, and machine shop work.
  • Repair small engines and specialty equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, generators, and compressors.
  • Operate and maintain seasonal equipment, including snowplows and salt spreaders.
  • Complete assigned repair tasks and ensure all work meets quality and safety standards.
  • Support the Fire Department by repairing ambulances, pumpers, rescue trucks, and ladder trucks when needed.
