About The Position

Provides oversight for operations at Springmaid Mountain Stables and related activities. Provides for the care, training and transportation of all horses. Manages the planning and execution of riding lessons and trail rides. Manages and supervises horses that are boarded at Springmaid Mountain. Interacts with boarders on contractual arrangements, pasture assignments, pasture conditions, health of horses, and feeding. All activities are managed with a high regard for safety.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and skill in the methods of equestrian and livestock management, i.e. horse feeding, grooming, and health
  • Excellent horse-riding skills
  • Knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment used in the care of horses
  • Ability to observe horses' health and make initial diagnoses of routine illnesses and injuries
  • Can determine the quality and appropriate use of feed products
  • Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision
  • Maintains effective relationships through contact and cooperation; can react calmly and quickly in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry and department
  • Capable of working in uncomfortable environmental conditions as required
  • Computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office and reservation software
  • Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, including a truck, horse trailer, tractors, hand tools, etc.
  • Must be reliable, dependable, professional and trustworthy
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training; will train
  • Valid Driver’s License with safe driving record

Responsibilities

  • Weekly scheduling of staff and related assignments
  • Provides day-to-day supervision of equestrian staff, including coaching, training, performance feedback, and ensuring alignment with operational and safety standards
  • Regular communication with General Manager about Equestrian operations
  • Risk assessment and management, and proper reporting and investigation of accidents
  • Providing an environment that emphasizes safety for staff and guests
  • Prepare, submit, and/or file required forms, waivers, records and reports
  • Routine daily care of all horses; including feeding, grooming and shoeing
  • Observe horses’ health; plan for medical care as necessary
  • Perform routine medical treatment and administer medications as required (i.e. vaccinations, deworm)
  • Responsible for all horse boarding activities
  • Cleanliness of stalls and other facilities
  • Coordinate with General Manager on trail maintenance and management
  • Coordinate with General Manager when feed and other supplies as needed
  • Riding lessons, trail rides, lead lines
  • Clinics and SMM events
  • All other duties as assigned
