Environmental Test Engineer II

Blue Origin•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

This role is part of Blue National Security (BNS), which designs, develops, and delivers launch and spacecraft systems for national security missions. The Environmental Test Engineer II applies multidisciplinary mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering knowledge and computer/software systems to develop, integrate, monitor, and support engineering infrastructure. The role includes identifying performance issues, conducting root cause analysis on failed components, implementing corrective measures, and improving processes and procedures. As part of a team supporting BNS, the engineer owns significant scopes of vertically integrated test capabilities and spacecraft test campaigns for multiple space vehicles. Responsibilities span coordinating with external suppliers, developing in-house test capabilities, installing test instrumentation, developing spacecraft-level environmental test campaigns, and testing flight hardware. The engineer architects environmental test programs, develops test plans, coordinates test procedures and scripts, and leads portions of test execution through vehicle integration and final pre-launch testing. The work also includes planning and conducting major test campaigns, developing test equipment, and compiling test reports. Travel up to 25% is required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Physics, Systems Engineering, or a related technical subject area.
  • Direct experience developing test infrastructure, integrating test articles, and testing major-assembly spacecraft test articles, with an emphasis on mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience testing flight hardware in thermal, vibration and/or acoustic, shock, and vacuum environments in accordance with MIL-STD-810, SMC-S-016, and MIL-STD-1540.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, standards, and technical requirements.
  • Ability to perform data analysis and reduction and present technical information in a clear, compelling visual format.
  • Experience with instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition systems.
  • Strong safety demeanor and experience, including hands-on planning and conduct of hazardous or critical operations.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive, professional relationships.
  • Ability to meet the stated U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, refugee, or asylum status requirement for employment.
  • Travel up to 25%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing test campaigns for acoustic testing, thermal vacuum testing, electromagnetic interference testing, and modal testing.
  • Experience installing removable or permanent test instrumentation on spaceflight hardware.
  • Experience with requirements development and management tools such as DOORS or DOORS Next Gen, product lifecycle management (PLM), and/or data tools such as Windchill.
  • Experience with 3D modeling, analytical, and/or scripting tools such as CREO, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, or C++.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining test scripts.
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense TS/SCI security clearance if requested.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, architect, and coordinate resources required to test integrated spacecraft for development and verification.
  • Coordinate with design-engineer subject matter experts across affected systems to incorporate verification requirements into detailed test plans for development risk-reduction or verification run-for-record events.
  • Conduct test design reviews, integration readiness reviews, and test readiness reviews.
  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate cost, schedule, and technical risks.
  • Coordinate with external suppliers and develop in-house test capabilities.
  • Install test instrumentation and develop spacecraft-level environmental test campaigns.
