About The Position

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) is seeking an Environmental Specialist 3 to join the Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at their Northwest District Office in Bowling Green, Ohio. This role serves as a lead resource for district staff, providing guidance, training, and technical support on solid waste management. The position involves reviewing engineering designs and technical reports, conducting field sampling and inspections at solid waste and C&DD facilities to assess compliance, and collaborating across divisions. The specialist will also coordinate project tracking, prepare progress reports, and assist with public outreach.

Requirements

  • 7 years of relevant programmatic experience OR a combination of education in an environmentally focused discipline or other job-related discipline and specific programmatic experience equaling 7 years.
  • OR completion of undergraduate core coursework in an environmentally-related discipline AND 3 years of relevant programmatic experience.
  • OR 2 years of relevant programmatic experience as an Environmental Supervisor, 85865.
  • OR equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment.
  • Applicants must be able to provide their own transportation for field work.
  • New employees in OEPA's solid waste program (excluding those in the solid waste planning unit) must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support, training and guidance to district staff.
  • Review peer reports to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Evaluate proposed designs for engineering soundness and compliance with solid waste regulations.
  • Assess operations and construction activities for compliance.
  • Prepare reports, permits, and compliance-related correspondence.
  • Coordinate project tracking and prepare progress reports.
  • Coordinate and plan work commitments, including field inspections, permits, technical reports, and related documents.
  • Serve as a lead resource for district staff on solid waste management.
  • Ensure staff stays current on solid waste rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Work independently to review engineering designs and peer technical reports for completeness and accuracy.
  • Conduct sampling and inspections at solid waste and C&DD facilities to observe operations and construction activities and assess compliance with state and federal rules.
  • Collaborate across divisions and agency offices by participating in technical work groups.
  • Support enforcement actions as a subject matter expert.
  • Assist with public outreach and inquiries.
