About The Position

This is a Registry/Per Diem position with no guaranteed or regularly assigned hours. Shifts are scheduled on an as-needed basis. Team members in this role are expected to work a minimum of three shifts within a four-week period to maintain active status. The Environmental Services Technician cleans and disinfects assigned areas within the hospital and/or off-site facilities, following specific procedures and schedules. This includes patient rooms, offices, restrooms, and other common areas. The role also involves operating various equipment, using chemicals safely, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and ensuring customer satisfaction through effective communication and conflict resolution. Responsibilities include preparing rooms after patient discharges, managing supplies, collecting and disposing of waste, and adhering to infection control policies. The position also requires commitment to professional growth, maintaining attendance and punctuality, and following departmental policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience
  • Basic computer skills preferred
  • Able to operate small electrical equipment e.g., vacuum cleaners
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English as related to the performance of the essential job activities outlined (including reading and comprehending chemical labels and other safety materials)
  • Walking, standing, bending, climbing and lifting throughout the work day.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For lifts over 35 pounds, lifting equipment is expected to be used or lift with at least one other associate when available.
  • Unique lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect assigned areas including walls, doors, ceilings, patient televisions, windows, furniture, tile, fixtures, appliances, floors, and equipment using appropriate cleaning solutions and following specific procedures and schedules.
  • Operate various equipment following department procedures.
  • Use chemicals and solutions following department policy.
  • Keep work areas in an orderly, clean, and safe condition.
  • Utilize AIDET with both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate ability to identify and resolve interpersonal conflicts constructively.
  • Demonstrate a positive, supportive attitude to patient families and other personnel.
  • Display patience and tact when dealing with other hospital personnel.
  • Present the department in a positive manner to all contacts.
  • Maintain a courteous and pleasant attitude to patients, families, and other contacts.
  • Maintain confidential patient and departmental information.
  • Utilize the appropriate chain of command in resolving complaints, grievances, or problems.
  • Thoroughly wash and sanitize beds when patients are discharged and make beds with clean linen.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize entire room and washroom when patients are discharged.
  • Use appropriate germicide in disinfecting rooms.
  • Select cleaning materials and supplies appropriate to the job and transport them to the work area.
  • Replenish supplies such as paper towels, toilet tissues, and soap; pick up additional supplies from the environmental services storeroom when needed.
  • Routinely collect waste and sanitize all garbage cans.
  • Observe and follow Standard (Universal) Precautions, Infection Control Policies, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Clean or sanitize after emergency spills as requested.
  • Place full, tied bags of soiled linen in linen chutes.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, visitors, and associates at all times.
  • Wash hands thoroughly throughout the day and follow the Hospital handwash policy.
  • Prepare detergents, germicidal solutions, and other cleaning/disinfecting solutions according to established formulas.
  • Sweep, dust mop, and wet mop floor areas and spot clean carpets using appropriate solutions.
  • Shampoo furniture, carpets, and rugs using appropriate equipment and supplies and adhering to applicable schedules.
  • Identify types of soiling and spotting and utilize proper solutions as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
  • Handle chemicals and solutions following departmental policies.
  • Ensure that all chemicals and solutions are in properly labeled containers.
  • Adhere to safety regulations as outlined in departmental policy and procedure.
  • Move equipment and furniture for cleaning, rearrangement, and/or relocation.
  • Arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion, and in accordance with applicable floor plans, after cleaning assigned area(s).
  • Arrange furniture for meetings, workshops, and community affairs according to specifications.
  • Clean equipment and notify supervisor of equipment needing repair.
  • Appropriately report safety hazards.
  • Return unused supplies to the closet where obtained, clean carts and equipment, and ensure all items are replaced in an orderly manner.
  • Collect and/or distribute soiled and/or clean linens, as required.
  • Collect trash and/or waste from all areas of the hospital, as required.
  • Collect hazardous and medical waste according to procedures established by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Sanitize all garbage/waste disposal containers.
  • Separate regular and recycle trash according to procedure.
  • Attend all mandatory departmental and hospital meetings and inservices.
  • Complete annual CBTs required.
  • Follow written department goals and objectives, and review annually with managers.
  • Seek education and learning experiences in areas of identified growth needs and review progress during annual evaluation.
  • Maintain proper attendance requirement outlined in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Plan for special days off in advance and submit written requests for time off to department management for approval per departmental guidelines.
  • Request PTO time in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Provide adequate notice to department management of absence, and in accordance with departmental policy, call two hours before the beginning of shift.
