About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare. Step into a mission-critical position at the forefront of radiological safety, where your work helps protect workers, the public, and the environment. In this role, you will apply technical expertise and regulatory knowledge to perform inspections involving radioactive material, x-ray equipment, reciprocity, and investigations. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in training to become a fully qualified Radiation inspector through on-the-job training from mentors, reading the provided material, learning the regulations, and attending training offered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), LDEQ, and others.
  • Perform compliance inspections on all registrants and licensees, including manufacturers, distributors, and users of radioactive material and radiation-producing equipment, within the assigned region; and respond to complaints and environmental incidents in the six Regional Offices in the state.
  • Prepare thorough written reports related to all field activity and complete post-inspection duties.
  • Assist with special projects including the development of SOP’s, manuals, inspection procedures, and other program materials.
  • Perform other assigned duties such as time keeping, participate in nuclear power plant drills, and other contributions to the Radiation Section.
