About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection in order to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare. Join the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s Public Participation team and play a key role in ensuring transparency and public engagement in environmental decision-making. The Public Participation Staff (PPS) position serves as the technical lead for coordinating public notices and public hearings across multiple regulatory programs, including Air, Water, Hazardous Waste, and Solid Waste. This role works closely with permitting, legal, fiscal, and technology teams to ensure regulatory compliance while providing the public with timely access to important environmental information. The position also leads the development and maintenance of Public Participation procedures, web resources, and documentation that support public involvement in environmental permitting and regulatory processes.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR A master’s degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate public noticing and public hearing activities for Air, Water, Hazardous Waste, and Solid Waste regulatory programs, ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Develop, prepare, and process public notices, including coordinating publication with media outlets, posting public notices to the LDEQ website, distributing required documents to public repositories, and maintaining public notice information on agency websites.
  • Coordinate and support public hearings by organizing logistics, securing venues, collaborating with legal staff and court reporters, and preparing and maintaining official hearing documentation.
  • Develop and maintain Public Participation Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory reference materials to support consistent and compliant public participation processes.
  • Serve as a liaison among internal divisions to resolve issues, respond to public inquiries, and ensure accurate documentation and recordkeeping for public participation activities.
