Environmental Risk Assessor Intern
About The Position
This role involves applying risk assessment and risk management strategies to support contaminated site decision-making under Federal, state, and international site cleanup programs. The intern will support and implement site characterization and remedial action projects, focusing on identifying and controlling potentially unacceptable human and ecological exposures to chemicals in the environment. The intern will assist in evaluating large environmental datasets, interpreting site characterization data, performing statistical and spatial data analysis, supporting contaminant fate/transport and exposure modeling, and assisting with report preparation.
Requirements
- Planned completion of Master or Bachelor degree in related field of Science, e.g., Biology, Toxicology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field in 2028
- Familiarity with spreadsheet and database software
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills required
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge or experience in ecological or human health risk assessment, environmental fate and transport modeling, statistical data analysis and sampling design, emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS), natural resource damages assessment is a plus, but not required
Responsibilities
- Assist in the evaluation of large environmental datasets for a wide variety of traditional, as well as emerging (e.g., PFAS), or proprietary chemicals.
- Observe how to interpret site characterization data.
- Perform statistical and spatial data analysis.
- Support contaminant fate/transport and exposure modeling to quantitatively evaluate human health and/or ecological risks.
- Assist with the preparation of reports and other written communications.
- Produce accurate reports for others by collecting data from a variety of standard sources and inputting it into standard formats.
- Organize and prepare complex documents using a variety of applications for technology devices, such as standard office software.
- Gather and summarize data for special reports.
- Collect a range of straightforward samples and undertake testing as directed and in accordance with defined processes and requirements to support regulatory compliance activity.
