About The Position

The Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) is seeking a strategic and experienced environmental health professional to direct a broad portfolio of programs that protect and promote community health. This role involves leading one of the region’s most complex environmental public health systems, overseeing programs related to food safety, water quality, waste management, and community health outcomes. The ideal candidate will thrive in an executive leadership position, balancing regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and community partnership. This full-time role is based at the College Ave Main Campus and requires guiding a multidisciplinary division through complex public health challenges. The position is under the direction of the Administrative Officer and involves administrative and technical operations, fiscal duties, supervisory duties, and other management responsibilities. The Director will serve as a member of the SRHD's Executive Leadership Team and the Emergency Response Team, overseeing approximately 35 employees and handling confidential information with discretion.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in major study in environmental health, sanitary science, microbiology or a closely related field.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible experience in environmental health, public health, or a closely related regulatory field, including management responsibility for staff, programs, or operations.
  • Registered Sanitarian with State, NEHA, or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and current auto insurance.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and certifications may be considered provided the individual’s background demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in public health, environmental health, or related field.
  • Experience working in a public health regulatory or local health jurisdiction environment.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the activities of the Environmental Public Health Division including Special Projects, Living Environment, Water Recreation, School Safety, Vector Control, lead surveillance, Food Safety, Liquid Waste, Solid Waste and Environmental Resources.
  • Performs administrative and technical operation responsibilities, fiscal duties, administrative duties, supervisory duties, and other management responsibilities.
  • Serves as a member of the Spokane Regional Health District's Executive Leadership Team and the Emergency Response Team.
  • Oversees the work of approximately 35 employees.
  • Performs duties that require discretion when preparing, disclosing and handling information that is confidential, controversial or sensitive in nature.
  • Communicates and maintains confidential records, and is privy to information and documentation that require discretion including sensitive information with respect to employer-employee relations during negotiations processes.
  • Requests or provides access for relevant confidential information needed to perform this role and responsibilities.
  • Exercises judgment and discretion in accordance with the parameters set by leadership.
  • Oversees the supervision, coaching, mentoring, training, and performance evaluation of division staff.
  • Directs and supervises program managers, including ensuring employees are trained and equipped to perform their duties.
  • Develops and manages division budgets to ensure adequate staff, equipment, resources, and other materials to perform necessary functions.
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and reviews divisional operating policies and procedures in accordance with district policies and requirements.
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team to recommend, collaborate, review, and manage district-wide issues, budgets, and policies.
