About The Position

This position is open to active employees of the Health Department only. The role involves conducting routine inspections within the food safety program, providing education, technical assistance, and regulatory information to the public. The individual will apply knowledge of food-borne, water-borne, and waste-borne communicable diseases and potential public health risks associated with solid and hazardous waste. Some weekend work and adjustments to normal working hours may be required. Work is performed under general supervision, with the incumbent planning and carrying out assignments and handling deviations in accordance with established guidelines. Performance is evaluated based on professional competency, adherence to program goals, technical soundness, and conformity to procedures and regulations.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution involving major study in environmental health, sanitary science, microbiology or public health or other closely related science.
Valid Washington State Driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
A driving record which meets the requirements of Snohomish County Health Department’s insurance carrier.
Background check pursuant to RCW 43.43.830.
Eligibility for registration as a Sanitarian with either the Washington State Board of Registered Sanitarians or the National Environmental Health Association.

Responsibilities

Maintain a professional working relationship with the regulated community, staff of other public agencies, and the public.
Travel to various sites throughout the county conducting inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with current regulations.
Provide education, technical assistance, and regulatory compliance advice to facilities, the public, and the media.
Translate technical and regulatory information to a variety of audiences.
Complete reports of areas in violation and recommend corrective measures.
Take appropriate enforcement action.
Meet with responsible parties to discuss correction of deficiencies and obtain compliance.
Review plans for establishments/facilities and inspect construction and remodeling.
Investigate complaints and incidents of suspected illness at establishments/facilities.
Maintain accurate field records, write reports, and make recommendations for follow-up actions.
Update and use computerized data management systems.
Perform sanitarian duties in other Environmental Sections as necessary to cover absences, equalize peak work periods, or balance the workload.
