We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Environmental Health & Safety Specialist II. The successful candidate with minimal supervision manages assigned health and safety programs, and assists in developing, reviewing, and improving them. The EH&S Specialist II provides support for health and safety programs managed by others within the department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, fire safety, engineering, or another applicable discipline
  • 5 years relevant experience
  • Good knowledge of regulatory requirements and technical issues for assigned programs
  • Demonstrated ability to manage assigned health and safety programs.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, to manage competing demands on time and resources, and to prioritize effectively.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to manage multiple projects to completion.
  • Good organizational, written, and verbal skills.
  • Good fact finding, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database computer programs.
  • Good ability to understand and interpret data.
  • Ability to wear and work in Level C personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to be on-call on a rotating basis to respond to off-hours emergency situations.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares annual budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Provides supervisor with justification for proposed expenditures.
  • Advises supervisor of issues/concerns promptly. Obtains authorization from supervisor as appropriate.
  • Obtains proposals from vendors.
  • Promptly approves and processes invoices.
  • Follows up on invoice issues as appropriate.
  • Is available on-call on a rotating basis to respond to health and safety emergencies involving NYU Langone facilities or employees.
  • Responds promptly to real and perceived emergencies involving health and safety issues.
  • Responds to and investigates fire alarms.
  • Maintains Hazwoper certification. Responds to and cleans up spills involving hazardous materials.
  • Responds to and investigates concerns about indoor air quality.
  • Maintains a good understanding of industrial hygiene equipment use and limitations. Is able to interpret complicated monitoring results.
  • Prepares, compiles, and maintains program records (e.g., inventories, minutes).
  • Conducts inspections (e.g., Interim Life Safety, Hazard Surveillance, smoke and fire barrier).
  • Serves as liaison to assigned department.
  • Provides training and respirator fit testing.
  • Assists with and coordinates drills as assigned.
  • Coordinates and conducts investigations and inspections.
  • Coordinates and conducts appropriate environmental and industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Interfaces with colleagues and vendors. Resolves difficult problems and conflicts appropriately, creatively, and effectively.
  • Manages vendors engaged in routine and non-routine projects and tasks.
  • Manages and maintains project records and incorporates relevant documents into departmental files.
  • Promptly processes Unifier tasks and maintains electronic records.
  • As assigned by supervisor, manages and assists in managing, monitoring, and improving health and safety programs.
  • Revises and updates Safety Policies, other policies, and procedures. Collaborates with supervisor to develop new policies and procedures.
  • Conducts comprehensive risk assessments and work site assessments for health and safety concerns.
  • Coordinates and conducts inspections, investigations, and audits with minimal direction.
  • Recommends appropriate control measures based on the hierarchy of controls.
  • Prepares, reviews, submits, and presents verbal and written institutional and regulatory reports.
  • Develops specifications for non-routine projects.
  • Develops new training programs. Revises and updates existing training materials. Coordinates and conducts training.
  • Annually evaluates the status of programs and develops goals for improvement.
  • Maintains weekly time database.
  • Adheres to departmental and NYU Langone policies and guidelines.
