About The Position

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist I, under general supervision, provides specialized knowledge in the operation and support of assigned area within an environmental health and safety program. This role involves investigations, assessments, and assistance with environmental compliance related to various federal and state regulations. The specialist will also be involved in developing and implementing environmental programs, conducting training, maintaining records, and responding to emergencies.

Requirements

Associate degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Two years of experience in an environmental health and safety or related field
Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health rules, regulations, and standards
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment system or water treatment system
Compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

Nice To Haves

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training
Training or experience related to Clean Air Act, Air Quality and Monitoring, and/or Texas Air Permitting
Visible Emissions Reader Certificate
May require a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license

Responsibilities

Performs oversight for TAMU’s environmental compliance with Clean Air Act (CAA)
Provides verbal and written interpretations of Federal, State, and Local environmental laws, regulations, programs, and agreements to faculty, staff, and students
Conducts air audits and visible emission checks as needed
Assists with oversight for TAMU's environmental compliance with Clean Water Act (CWA), and Clean Air Act (CAA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
Assists in developing plans and implements programs and training that ensure compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements
Submits or assists in preparing appropriate reports, permit applications, and/or inspection results as required by the regulations
Prepares annual air reports and permitting
Responds with other EHS personnel to chemical spills or hazardous waste emergencies with university spill vehicle
Assists with maintaining equipment involved in emergency response
