About The Position

North Wind Site Services is focused on providing engineering, program management, environmental remediation services including investigation and characterization, environmental restoration, unexploded ordnance/military munitions response (MMRP), regulatory public involvement services, environmental compliance, logistics, and records and facility management. The Environmental Field Technician will be working on projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. This role will conduct remediation, conduct waste management, collect samples of soil, sludge, concrete, groundwater, wastewater, etc. This role will require activities such as hand digging, hand auger, heavy equipment operation and concrete cutting using hand tools, power tools, and special equipment to find areas with hazardous contamination and help clean them up.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency and at least four (4) years of any full-time work experience; OR Equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted.
  • Must be able to operate heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work such as digging in hard ground, augering deep holes by hand, running power tools, and moving heavy waste containers.
  • Must be able to work while wearing respirator or hazmat suit.
  • Must complete specialized training and be able to closely follow safety procedures.
  • Must accurately collect and record data on forms and in logbooks.
  • Must be able to physically handle environmental equipment such as 55-gallon drums, up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work safely and independently outdoors for extended periods under inclement weather conditions.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver license.
  • Ability to pass U.S. Government employment background check and acquire U.S. Government Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential card.
  • Proof of citizenship will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Candidates may be required to obtain and hold a Secret or Higher US Government Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Operation of heavy equipment for waste management, excavation, and remediation.
  • Conducts tests and field investigations to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering and scientific personnel.
  • Conducts chemical and physical laboratory and field tests according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances.
  • Collects water samples from streams and lakes, or groundwater, wastewater, or water from other sources to assess potential contamination.
  • Collects soil, silt, or mud to determine chemical composition and nature of contaminates.
  • Prepares sample for testing, records data, and prepares summaries and charts for review, sets monitoring equipment to provide flow of information, installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation.
  • May operate fixed or mobile monitoring or data collection station.
  • May conduct field testing related to environmental remediation and potential contamination sampling activity.
