About The Position

Solar One is a 501c(3) organization that empowers communities in the New York City metro area to thrive in the face of the challenges brought on by climate change and embrace a world that is low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive. Solar One's mission is to design and deliver innovative education, training, and technical assistance that fosters sustainability and resiliency in diverse urban environments. We empower learning that changes how people think about energy, sustainability, and resilience by engaging and educating diverse stakeholders and beneficiaries. Solar One seeks an Environmental Educator to deliver quality environmental STEM and climate action education in NYC. Under the direction of the Director of STEM Education, the Environmental Educator will teach Solar One’s climate action and green career readiness programs with K-12 students across all five boroughs and occasionally throughout NY State. Programs may be taught in English or occasionally in Spanish or another language. There is the potential for occasional travel around New York State. Computer-based work can be done at home, at our Solar One Environmental Education Center, or at our office space in Long Island City, Queens.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching Solar One’s curriculum focused on climate action and solar hard skills.
  • Teaching is often at schools, at our Education Center at Stuyvesant Cove Park, and potentially virtual. Travel around New York City is often and travel around New York State will be occasional.
  • Co-facilitating professional development workshops for New York State teachers utilizing Green Design Lab’s curriculum.
  • Coordinating programs with schools and other community partners. This includes program planning, materials coordination, and scheduling.
  • Participate in professional networks to promote Green Design Lab programming as well as establish partnerships with potential stakeholders
  • Assist the Director of STEM Education with administrative tasks such as recording, tracking, and reporting activities delivered to schools and teachers.
  • Utilizing program evaluation feedback from students, teachers, and the school Administrators to update curriculum alongside the education team.
  • Facilitate school STEM programming and camp during the summer between July to Mid August.
