About The Position

The Aquarion Water Authority (AWA) is seeking an Environmental Compliance Intern to join its Watershed and Environmental Management Department. This intern position, based at the Aspetuck Environmental Center in Easton, Connecticut, offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental compliance, water quality monitoring, and natural resource management. The role is designed for students seeking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and is available for the remainder of the 2026 calendar year, with strong preference for fall semester availability. The intern will work up to 29 hours per week, with a flexible schedule between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, making it ideal for upperclassmen undergraduate or graduate students.

Requirements

  • Hold and maintain a valid State of Connecticut license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Be able to lift coolers of water samples in and out of their vehicle.
  • Be able to walk in wooded areas and on uneven terrain.
  • Seeking or recently received degrees in Forestry, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Engineering or a related field.
  • Can work at least 20 hours most weeks.

  • Availability through the fall semester is strongly preferred.
  • Upperclassman undergraduate or graduate student in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Be trained in sample collection, inspection, and data entry activities to support both the Source Protection and Environmental Compliance programs.
  • Learn about and assist the department with natural resource, land management, forestry, and outdoor recreation programs.
  • Conduct Source Protection inspections.
  • Conduct Environmental compliance inspections.
  • Perform watershed sample collection.
  • Perform wastewater sample collection from drinking water treatment facilities.
  • Enter data using MS Office Suite, ArcGIS, Klir, etc.
  • Compile data for annual compliance filings.
  • Assist with forestry inventory and boundary marking.
  • Assist with the compilation of Sustainability metrics.
