About The Position

The Environmental and Community Support Liaison role will serve as a dedicated resource hired by the Metis Nation of Ontario working collaboratively as the primary point-of-contact and coordination lead assigned to the Project. The Environmental and Community Support Liaison role is a community and field-based position. The aim of the position is to maximize the realization of synergies between the Project, and the MNO. The Environmental and Community Support Liaison role will be provided the opportunity to engage with Greenstone Gold Mine regarding the Métis way of life (i.e., biological, ecological, economic, social, cultural, and spiritual). The Environmental and Community Support Liaison will participate and organize community and consultation sessions to discuss and present information pertaining to the Project along with Greenstone Gold Mine representatives and third-party experts. The Environmental and Community Support Liaison will support the management of technical consultants hired by the Region or Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Lands and Resource Branch and ensure input from the Region, and regional leadership is being appropriately shared in a timely manner to support project timelines. In addition, the candidate will support implementation of the Relationship Building and Capacity Agreement, and Community Benefit Agreement (where it is finalized) as deemed necessary by regional leadership. The position will report jointly on the Project to the Environmental Manager or designate and External Relations Manager or designate. This is a permanent position where the successful candidate will contribute to a robust and environmentally safe future construction, operations and closure of the Project.

Requirements

  • Highschool (Grade 12)/GED or equivalent work experience. Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience
  • An understanding of environmental technology and ability to take samples;
  • Presentation and facilitation skills;
  • Experience in organizing community or cross-cultural events.
  • Working as part of a spatially distributed team requirement to respond quickly to requests that might arise on short notice;
  • Varied work schedule (evenings, weekends as required)

  • An understanding of environmental issues and Métis issues or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to liaise with MNO leadership, MNO staff, and Greenstone Gold Mine;
  • Ability to follow and maintain detailed and accurate records, documentation, and policies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and individually with minimal supervision.
  • Strong commitment to a safe work environment.

Nice To Haves

  • College diploma or university degree strongly preferred (Mathematics, sciences or computer studies would be an asset).
  • Experience in a mining, mineral exploration or industrial environment is an asset.
  • Understanding of government regulations pertaining to mine operations is an asset;
  • Outdoor and field experience and licences (e.g. operating boat, canoe, ATV).
  • Experience with boats, UTV/ATVs and snowmobiles is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and participate in Project environmental activities, including participating in monitoring activities, as agreed to by Greenstone Gold Mine.
  • Quarterly reporting on activities completed under those designated Workplans or on-site activities conducted at the Project for Region-2 leadership, MNO Lands and Resources Branch and Greenstone Gold Mine leadership.
  • Participate and organize community and consultation sessions to discuss and present information pertaining to the Project along with Greenstone Gold Mine representatives and third-party experts.
  • Support designated deliverables and responsibilities as deemed necessary by Region 2 MNO Lands and Resource staff pertaining to the Project.
  • Bi-weekly update with Greenstone Gold Mine representatives
  • Work with the technical consultants hired by the Region-2, and MNO Lands and Resource Branch in alignment with Region-2 direction and policy
  • Manage the review of compliance materials shared with Region-2.
  • Provide necessary updates and reports on meeting outcomes/issues MNO Lands and Resource Branch staff, Region-2 leadership, and Greenstone Gold Mine designated staff.
  • Review reports and provide recommendations on project-specific issues to Greenstone Gold Mine in accordance with MNO Lands and Resource Branch staff, Region-2 leadership direction.
  • Organize Region-2 community meetings in relation to the Project.
  • Support implementation of the Relationship Building and Capacity Agreement for the Region-2.
  • Support negotiations of the Community Benefit Agreement as deemed necessary by Region-2 leadership.
  • Coordinate flow of information between the Region-2 leadership, MNO Lands and Resource Branch as appropriate.
  • Support onsite ceremonial or cultural events at the Project.
  • Provide advice/recommendations on emerging trends related to environmental monitoring to Greenstone Gold Mine.
  • Perform general administrative duties as required.
  • Coordinate engagement meetings as required between Region-2 consultants and Greenstone Gold Mine representatives.
  • Adhere to all relevant corporate Greenstone Gold Mine policies and procedures while working on site.
  • Support activities that promote regional economic development in respect of the Project, if these opportunities arise, such as organizing meetings that advance contract- and job opportunities for local Metis.
  • Act as point of contact for community engagement and travel to communities for meetings with Region-2 leadership, LRC staff, and Greenstone Gold Mine designated staff, as directed.
  • Develop communication plans in respect of the Project, including the development of content, and plain speak communication tools, such as mail outs, website ads, and other communications for the Métis Community related to the Project.
  • Support the LRC Manager and LRC Mineral Development Advisor as needed.
  • Promoting the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)
  • Reporting all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adhering to all health and safety requirements within the GGM health and safety procedures, MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation. This includes the regular use of SPOT devices and tag-in/tag-out procedures.
  • Performing other collaborative work to improve processes, standards and job/branch-related duties as required.
