About The Position

The prime objective of the Environmental Technician is to gather and review environmental data about the assigned industrial site and/or project. The Environmental Technician will monitor the operations of this project through on-site monitoring, including water monitoring in the field. Collected data will be analyzed and interpreted throughout the monitoring program by the technician as well as in a team with the Environmental Team at the mine and MNO staff. The data will be synthesized and presented regularly to the MNO Environmental Committee as well as the MNO Regional Consultation Committee regarding any issues that have the potential to affect Métis rights, land use, water use or way of life.

Requirements

College Diploma (1 or 2 year)/ Post-secondary education in a relevant field or equivalent combination of technical/field experience and Métis cultural knowledge.
1 to 3 years of experience in (e.g. environmental, forestry, water resources).
An understanding of environmental technology and ability to take samples;
Record keeping, data collection;
Outdoor and field experience and licences (e.g. operating boat, canoe, ATV).
Working a varied work schedule (evenings, weekends as required)
Ownership of a valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
Knowledge of Metis Traditional Land Use, mining, environmental sector, ecology, biology, chemistry or Indigenous/Métis issues;
An understanding of environmental issues and Métis issues or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly;
Environmental data collection skills;
Proficiency with field equipment (e.g., GPS, water quality testing, binoculars);
Ability to drive a car, and operate ATV, canoe and boat;
Record keeping;
Self-motivation and time management;
Health and safety on industrial sites and in outdoor environments;
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to liaise with MNO leadership, MNO staff, and Project staff;
Organizational skills;
Dependability and strong work ethic;
Attention to detail and accuracy;
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

Responsibilities

Responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reviewing environmental data related to the industrial activities of the Project both off-site (20%) and in-project site (80%); Duties include, but are not limited to, research, liaising and reporting on the operations and initiatives.
Reviewing and providing recommendations regarding planned and ongoing operations, including permits, plans, studies and applications on behalf of the MNO.
Developing and maintaining contacts with relevant representatives on any initiatives, plans or issues that have the potential to effect and impact the regional Métis community.
Assisting in the review of environmental monitoring data and impacts to Métis rights.
Assisting in monitoring surveys including aquatic, terrestrial, air, fish, amphibian and bird surveys.
Planning and executing engagement activities with the MNO region and the wider-MNO community, such as consultation meetings, site tours and community information sessions, etc.
Duties include, but are not limited to, scheduling, confirming budgets, booking venues/catering, preparation of expense forms, purchase orders, agendas, briefings, briefing notes and leading meetings with the MNO Regional Consultation Committee, proponents, government officials and broader Métis community.
Participating as a member of the MNO Environment Subcommittee.
Participating in MNO Regional Consultation Committee meetings to provide updates on the Project operations, and reporting back any concerns of the MNO or their citizens to the Manager of the Project.
Participating in any discussions relating to the mitigation of negative environmental impacts on the Métis community, including liaising with the appropriate Ministries in Ontario and Canada.
Working collaboratively with other staff of the LRC Branch and applicable MNO Branches on assigned projects, initiatives and issues.
Maintaining a thorough record of all activities and engagement associated with the Project, including relevant issues and initiatives. Software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint or other project management software may be implemented for project and other related coordination purposes.
Maintaining a record of reports prepared for the MNO, as well as associated documents (e.g., results, notices, scientific reports)
Promoting the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)
Reporting all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adhering to all health and safety requirements within MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation. This includes the regular use of SPOT devices and tag-in/tag-out procedures.
Performing other collaborative work to improve processes, standards and job/branch-related duties as required.
