About The Position

The Environ Hlth & Safety Cdr I will be responsible for preparing for and conducting inspections of university laboratories to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves reviewing records, scheduling visits, conducting site visits, administering survey questionnaires, visually inspecting various laboratories (lab safety, biological, shops, and IFAS), and evaluating safety equipment. The position also requires operating a UF/state vehicle for travel to inspection sites. Additionally, the role involves evaluating survey results, generating reports, providing assistance with noted deficiencies, and following up on corrective actions. Administrative tasks include auditing purchase requisitions and orders for hazardous materials and safety equipment, managing the Lab Safety email inbox, handling EH&S forms, and updating safety materials. Special projects may involve evaluating data from the University research community, benchmarking with peer safety programs, researching safety topics, and assisting with or providing training.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and three years of appropriate experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License Required.
  • Post offer health assessment Required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of lab safety regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of research laboratories, especially those using chemicals.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to fully, logically, and concisely explain safety issues to customers (UF staff, primarily researchers).
  • Ability to work on-campus with occasional travel to off-site locations.
  • Ability to wear a tight-fitting respirator for emergency purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in a chemistry-related field.
  • Two (2) or more years of benchtop laboratory experience with chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for and conducts inspections of university laboratories to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Reviews records, schedules visits, conducts site visits, administers survey questionnaires, visually inspects laboratories (lab safety, biological, shops and IFAS), and evaluates various pieces of safety equipment.
  • Operates UF/state vehicle(s) to and from inspection sites.
  • Evaluates survey results, generates reports, and provides assistance related to noted deficiencies.
  • Evaluates corrective actions from noted deficiencies and follows up as needed.
  • Audits purchase requisitions and purchase orders sent through UF’s eProcurement system for hazardous materials and safety equipment.
  • Monitors the Lab Safety email inbox and answers general safety-related questions.
  • Manages and tracks EH&S forms such as fume hood protocols and decontamination forms.
  • Updates lab safety handouts, reference materials and web page content as directed.
  • Completes special projects including the evaluation and gathering of data from the University research community.
  • Benchmarks with peer safety programs.
  • Researches safety related topics.
  • Assists with or providing training to the research community.
  • Other duties as assigned.
