About The Position

The English Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills contributing to their educational and social development. This role involves managing instructional time, student behavior, and instructional presentation, as well as monitoring student performance and providing feedback. The teacher will also facilitate instruction aligned with school and system-wide curricular goals and perform non-instructional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret extensive technical instructions; and to deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply principles of descriptive statistics, statistical inference and statistical theory.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

  • Three professional references are required to complete the application. Professional references should be recent and either a supervisor, co-worker, or subordinate who has worked with you. Personal references from family/friends are not accepted and Professor/Advisor references are only accepted for recent graduates with no work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time by having materials ready, starting class quickly, getting students on task, and maintaining high student time-on-task.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing rules and procedures for routine matters, student participation, and movement within the classroom, and by promptly and consistently monitoring and addressing inappropriate behavior.
  • Present instruction by reviewing previous materials, introducing new lessons with clear objectives, speaking fluently and precisely, using understandable concepts and language, providing relevant examples, assigning tasks with a high success rate, asking appropriate questions, pacing lessons effectively, making smooth transitions, clarifying assignments, and summarizing main points.
  • Monitor student performance by maintaining clear work standards, circulating during class to check work, using various assessments to check progress, and posing questions clearly.
  • Provide feedback on student work, both in-class and out-of-class, to encourage growth, affirming correct responses and providing sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.
  • Facilitate instruction by having an instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide goals, using diagnostic information to revise objectives, maintaining accurate student performance records, aligning objectives with strategies and student needs, and utilizing available resources.
  • Interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned, adhere to established laws and policies, and demonstrate growth through a professional development plan.
