About The Position

The English Instructor will be responsible for providing academic instruction in English, preparing course materials, presenting courses, and evaluating student performance. This role also involves institutional service, student advising, and engaging in research and professional development activities. The position is a 9-month faculty appointment within the Liberal Arts & Humanities department at soLAcc.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in the discipline or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in the discipline being taught or an equivalent determined by the College.
  • For technical faculty teaching in nontransferable programs: Associate's Degree, or an equivalent determined by the College and demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline.
  • Technical faculty not meeting minimum requirements must establish a professional development plan and demonstrate steady progress toward attaining an Associate’s Degree.
  • Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds of community college students is desirable.
  • Passing pre-employment criminal background screen is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic instruction and prepares course materials aligned with departmental and divisional structures.
  • Develops course syllabi, schedules, and outlines in accordance with master syllabi and college policies.
  • Utilizes current pedagogical practices and materials to support student learning.
  • Holds office hours as per policy IS-109.
  • Creates an equitable and respectful learning environment for all students.
  • Maintains the required class management system (e.g., Canvas) in a timely manner.
  • Provides necessary resources for students to perform on assignments.
  • Starts and ends class on time, making effective use of class time.
  • Provides fair and timely grading of student coursework.
  • Administers required assessments (SRI, Program, SLO, Pretest/Posttest, QEP).
  • Returns/acknowledges course emails from students within 48-72 hours.
  • Provides alternative assignments when course time is missed.
  • Displays a professional demeanor and uses professional language when interacting with students.
  • Encourages student participation through various instructional methods.
  • Provides adequate and constructive feedback on assessments.
  • Computes grades accurately and fairly, notifying students of any necessary adjustments with ample notice and reasoning.
  • Properly utilizes and applies assessment methods in accordance with master syllabus, department/program outcomes, and course syllabus.
  • Maintains required office hours and meets with students in a timely fashion.
  • Provides accommodations to meet with students outside of office hours, if needed.
  • Serves and participates on college-assigned committees and discipline search committees.
  • Follows policies and procedures of the college, unit, division, and department, including submission of time cards, performance reporting, academic integrity, registration, graduation, and attendance.
  • Attends/completes required trainings, college-wide events, graduation, unit, division, and department meetings.
  • Provides timely notice to appropriate college members when committees, courses, trainings, or meetings will be missed.
  • Attends at least one faculty senate meeting.
  • Attends and participates in advisory/program/accreditation meetings, if applicable.
  • Works collaboratively with others.
  • Represents the college in a manner, appearance, and behavior that promotes a positive image in college-related outreach activities.
  • Represents the college in 2 or more outreach activities or offers long-term uncompensated academic expertise in the local, state, or national community, or serves on a Local, State, or National Board in their discipline.
  • Assists students with advising via in-person or online appointments and is easily accessible.
  • Maintains required advising chat hours per week, if applicable.
  • Posts advising messages within 48 hours of receipt.
  • Attends required advising trainings.
  • Responds to advising requests within 72 hours of contact by a student.
  • Participates in a student-focused activity or workshop once a year.
  • Attends seminars, webinars, lectures, or workshops beyond mandatory college sessions.
  • Belongs to one professional organization.
  • Makes and records monthly industry visits, if applicable.
  • Attends and participates in semi-annual program advisory meetings, if applicable.
  • Pursues or acquires advanced degrees, certifications, etc.
  • Maintains continuing education associated with licensing and/or regulatory grant proposals.
  • Participates in a Leadership Academy.
  • Reviews textbooks or articles, engages in creative work or performance, submits grants, or judges local/regional competitions related to the teaching discipline.
  • Exhibits or performs a body of work, serves as a featured or keynote speaker, implements and maintains a grant, or judges state/national competitions related to the teaching discipline.
  • Completes research and composes successful grant proposals as a primary investigator.
  • Conducts research for a state or national committee or group that shows clear teaching or program benefit.
  • Maintains an ongoing research agenda for publication showing significant data gathering or analysis, as well as progress each year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
