About The Position

The Stony Brook School seeks a talented, mission-aligned faculty member to join our English Department beginning in August 2026. This role is expected to center on our foundational English courses, especially English 8, with opportunities to teach upward through the program, including upper school English courses, depending on departmental needs. Founded in 1922, The Stony Brook School is a co-ed Christian college-prep boarding and day school for grades 7–12 on a 55-acre campus on Long Island's North Shore. We unite academic rigor with authentic Christian faith in a diverse, global community. All candidates should have a demonstrable Christian commitment and an educational philosophy that is consistent with The Stony Brook School's mission.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable Christian commitment.
  • Educational philosophy consistent with The Stony Brook School's mission.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, Education, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset and enthusiasm for developing as a teacher, mentor, and colleague.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Desire to serve in a faith-based educational environment that emphasizes Christian scholarship and character formation.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with a team of educators.
  • Required background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading discussion-based English classes (such as Socratic seminars, Harkness, and other student-centered approaches) that cultivate close reading, clear writing, and respectful dialogue forming Christian virtue and character.

Responsibilities

  • Teach foundational English courses, especially English 8, with opportunities to teach upper school English courses.
  • Serve as an active member of the boarding school community, sharing in evening and weekend supervision.
  • Coach athletics or lead co-curriculars.
  • Chaperone events.
  • Proctor study halls.
  • Support community meals.
  • Teach 4-5 classes.
  • Lead or assist with 1-2 co-curricular commitments.
  • Participate in the residential life program.
  • Plan and deliver mission-aligned curriculum and lessons with clear objectives, strong materials, and thoughtful assessments that move students toward growth and mastery.
  • Lead discussion-based English classes (such as Socratic seminars, Harkness, and other student-centered approaches) that cultivate close reading, clear writing, and respectful dialogue forming Christian virtue and character.
