About The Position

This role is within Solid Waste Management Services, SWM Transfer Stations & Landfill Ops. The position is located at Keele Valley Landfill and does not offer hybrid work. There are full-time, permanent, and temporary (12 months) vacancies available. The hourly rate is $38.20 - $41.70, with a shift of Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. This position is affiliated with L79 Full-time, and there are 2 positions open. The posting period is from May 28, 2026, to June 11, 2026.

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary Education in Environmental or Earth Sciences Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring field work (e.g. sampling of ground water and surface water).
  • Experience using computer software including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario class "G" driver's licence and be eligible to qualify for a City driver's permit.
  • Knowledge in the sampling of ground water, surface water, landfill gas monitoring and sampling.
  • Knowledge of Purge Wells, Leachate Collection and Landfill Gas Collection Systems.
  • Understanding of the principles and application of environmental monitoring theories, methods and practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with consultants, contractors, colleagues, other City employees at all levels and members of the public.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize.
  • Ability to learn how to use a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and documents (e.g. plans and profiles, surveys, specifications, etc.).
  • Ability to perform field work in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations, statutes, standards and practices (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks).
  • Basic analytical skills with the ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations in an engineering environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all organizational levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of landfill gas monitoring would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates, researches and conducts studies.
  • Collects and summarizes data for reports.
  • May be asked to ensure contractors are performing construction in accordance with permits, safety regulations and according to tenders and specifications.
  • Transforms information from plans into digital data. Maintains and updates data.
  • Collects samples for analysis of surface water and ground water including measurement of field parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity. Logs water samples into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and delivers to City laboratory.
  • Attends site meetings with contractors, utility companies, etc. regarding construction, repair of closed landfill infrastructure.
  • Conducts field inspections of closed Landfills and evaluate and assess for environmental impact and condition.
  • Operates and maintain a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless, computerized and other environmental equipment.
  • Collects and analyzes data of water monitoring wells, gas collection wells or probes, measuring water levels and/or gas levels.
  • Operates equipment and performs field work.
  • Monitors Landfills for environmental conditions and gas collection efficiency (i.e. liner instrumentation lysimeter monitoring, vibrating wire piezometers, landfill gas flow rates and concentrations, flaring and collection systems, methane surface emissions, purge well inspections surface and ground water monitoring).
