About The Position

Hennepin County’s Transportation Operations department is hiring an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician for the Asset Management division’s Roadway Data group. Engineering Technicians help develop, operate, and maintain a safe and effective county highway system. The hiring list may be used to fill a vacancy at either level, with the class selected based on the applicant’s education and experience. This role does not involve programming or coding; it focuses on field data collection, equipment operation, and routine data processing using standard tools. The position is hybrid, with work performed onsite at the Public Works Facility in Medina, in the field, and remotely as duties require. Travel throughout Hennepin County for fieldwork and meetings is required. Hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. During summer, most time is spent in the field collecting data; during winter, work shifts to data-related computer tasks in the office or remotely. A reliable internet connection is needed for VPN work. The work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., with limited flexibility. At the Assistant Engineering Technician level, duties include collecting GPS data and photos of new and modified roadway assets; reviewing data tables; using ArcGIS desktop software for mapping and quality control; checking data for completeness; maintaining consistency between GIS files and the asset management system; using project plans to verify inventories; assisting with intern training and supporting field staff with data documentation; communicating the status of data collection, processing, inspections, maintenance, and plan information; documenting unusual field assets; and supporting asset management work through guidelines, reports, records, file organization, workflow charts, field assistance, and maps. At the Engineering Technician level, the employee performs the duties above independently and at a higher level, including more complex work and frequent spatial and non-spatial quality checks using ArcGIS. This is a full-time, benefit-earning position. The listed annual salary ranges are $50,101.44–$69,273.22 for Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I) and $63,284.85–$84,202.03 for Engineering Technician (Level II). Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. New benefit-earning employees attend in-person New Employee Orientation in downtown Minneapolis.
