About The Position

As an Engineering Technician with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), you will play a key role in supporting vital construction projects that impact travelers every day. You will take part in hands-on work that helps keep roads, bridges, and structures safe and accessible for communities across the state. This is a 12-month training program which provides a strong foundation for a future career in engineering and public service. This is an exciting role which supports transportation construction projects by assisting with inspections, documentation, and various technical tasks. You will learn the foundational skills needed to ensure that your work meets required standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing materials and workmanship on transportation projects to ensure conformance with contract requirements
  • Create inspection checklists by researching contract items and standards such as Pub 408 and other reference materials
  • Record and review contractor work using manual or electronic methods and enter daily information into the ECMS system
  • Inspect placement of materials such as concrete, bituminous products, and drainage components
  • Assist in addressing field construction issues and completing calculations, sketches, and quantity estimates
  • Interact with staff, agencies, and the public to help ensure effective project administration
