About The Position

North Wind Services (NWS) is seeking an Engineering Technician V - Quality Assurance Technician to join their supplemental labor team at federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy, specifically at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. This role supports the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world's largest laser facility, which utilizes nearly 40,000 optics. The primary responsibility of this detail-oriented and self-motivated technician is to perform incoming and outgoing inspections of large optical components. This involves inspecting finished and uncoated optics for surface flaws and contamination, documenting defects, reviewing drawing specifications, creating inspection maps, and generating Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) when necessary. The technician will evaluate optical surfaces for imperfections such as scratches, digs, stains, haze, inclusions, cracks, and edge chips. Inspections are conducted in a Class 100 cleanroom and dark-room environment using specialized lighting and measurement tools. The successful candidate must be highly observant, able to identify and measure defects with unaided vision, and accurately record findings according to established procedures and quality standards. The technician will collaborate with production, engineering, and supervision to ensure optics meet requirements before release, maintain inspection documentation, support quality investigations, and communicate results professionally. Given NIF's 24/7 operational nature, the position may require flexibility to work overtime, shifts, and weekends, including alternate schedules like 4/10 or evening shifts. The candidate must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, meet pre-employment requirements, pass on-site training, and obtain a Q-Level Security Clearance through the Department of Energy.
