About The Position

This position is accountable for supervising the activities, within a designated geographical area, to ensure that all aggregate provided by a source are of good quality and meets the specified gradation requirements of the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS), Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, and Special Provisions as governed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire Aggregate Area Supervisors. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years of engineering experience.
  • Successful completion of the IDOT Management Training Program for 5-day Aggregates (CET 021) or 3-day Aggregates (CET 020) with the 2-day upgrade (CET 027).
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background check.
  • Requires extensive districtwide, statewide, and interstate travel.
  • Requires occasional night work and overtime.
  • Requires ability to lift 40-50 pounds.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.

  • Successful completion of IDOT Quality Management Training Program for both PCC Level I (CET030) and HMA Level I (CET 029) (formerly known as QC/QA HMA Level I and PCC Level I).

Responsibilities

  • Minimizes production of marginal or unacceptable material by overseeing manufacturing procedures to assure compliance with approved standards in the Aggregate Gradation Control System (AGCS) programs.
  • Trains and evaluates subordinates to ensure a competent staff who comply with department requirements.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with material producers to ensure that only proper quality material is delivered to job sites.
  • Observes and verifies compliance of aggregate producers with the department’s AGCS program, as well as the Manual for Aggregate Inspection.
  • Remains up to date on the requirements for materials produced by local suppliers so that required inspections and sampling can be conducted professionally and accurately.
  • Inspects aggregate material and aggregate sources and monitors plant operation to ensure that the aggregate produced meets the specifications required for each individual project.
  • Remains up to date on the production and sampling of recycled concrete and slag aggregates and the requirements for accepting virgin and processed materials.
  • Obtains any needed certifications and performs the required inspections on new products and raw feed as required within the specifications.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
