About The Position

This is an Engineering Technician III level position that will serve as the lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects. The role involves monitoring daily progress of projects, resolving constructability issues to maintain project schedules, and directing/scheduling the work of technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. The employee will manage all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers. This role may involve supervising and training multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract construction inspectors. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required for material sampling and testing. The position may require working nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. The role requires the ability to take notes, good communication skills, and the ability to supervise and instruct lower-level employees. The employee will maintain project diaries daily, including correspondence with contractors. The role involves both office and field duties, and projects may last for several months or longer. The position may be subject to a wide range of hazards such as rough or uneven terrain and/or adverse weather conditions. The employee will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Steel toe shoes are required. Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.
  • Ability to take notes.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods.
  • Steel toe shoes are required.
