Under general and/or immediate supervision from higher-level engineering staff, the Engineering Technician II performs journey-level technical drafting, office, and field engineering work and provides assistance and information to the public. This is the full journey level in the Engineering Technician series. Employees perform the full range of assigned duties, including moderately complex drafting, office, and field engineering work, typically with only occasional instruction or assistance in new or unusual situations. The class is flexibly staffed and is normally filled through advancement from Engineering Technician I; external candidates require previous work experience. In the Traffic Division’s Land Development Support function, the position performs routine traffic engineering tasks primarily supporting land development projects. Work includes assisting with transportation planning and traffic engineering design for project entitlements, private construction, and utility infrastructure. Reviews may include transportation impact screenings, preliminary data for traffic studies, site transportation planning, traffic design plans such as signing and striping or traffic signals, and temporary traffic control plans prepared by external consultants. The position coordinates extensively with other City departments and engineering divisions, as well as public project applicants. The position also reviews and processes maps and easement and right-of-way documents, verifies subdivision approval conditions, conducts site inspections and surveying activities, prepares engineering plans and estimates, maintains maps and records, and responds to public inquiries. The listed functions may be supplemented as necessary by the employer.
